Revival and Reformation:
Effects in Evangelism
Key Scriptures:
Matthew 24:14
Revelation 14:6 - 12
The ultimate objective of the call for
Revival and Reformation is to
prepare the Church for the final
harvest for God’s kingdom and usher
in the return of our Lord Jesus.
Today, the Church’s growth rate is simply not
keeping pace with the world’s burgeoning
population. An honest evaluation of our current
evangelistic impact on the world leads to the
conclusion that unless there is a dramatic change
we will not complete Heaven’s assignment in this
generation. In spite of our best efforts, all our
plans, strategies, and resources are incapable of
finishing God’s mission for His glory on earth.
The Spiritual Need of the Church today:
“God has given His ministers the message of
truth to proclaim….The ministers have been
seeking the hidden treasure and have been
opening up the caskets and letting the jewels
of truth shine forth, but the members of the
church have not done a hundredth part of
that which God requires of them.”
World Statistics:
In a single day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes
= 86,400 seconds – as the earth rotates
around its axis, on average ….
* 358, 522 babies are born
* 155, 012 people die
* 203, 520 people added to the
world’s population
The Earth’s population already reached
7 billion in June 2011
Currently, over a billion people live in
China and India
Continent of Africa has already reached
1 billion
Of the 7 billion people – only
approximately 30% or 2.2 billion are
Christians
There are 1.5 billion Muslims
1.1 billion secular, agnostics and
atheists
Almost 1 billion Hindus
376 million Buddhists
Hundreds of other Religious Groups
SDA is one of the fastest growing
Christian denominations
There are now more than 17 million
members = approximately
.77% of all the Christians
Only .25 % or a small fraction of the
world’s population
Some thought-provoking questions:
1. How will the work of God on earth
ever be finished?
2. Is it possible for the gospel in the
context of the three angels’
messages to circle the globe in a
relatively short time?
3. What will give us the breakthrough in the
proclamation of the gospel that we long
for?
4. When will we see the fulfilment of Jesus’
words: “This gospel of the kingdom
will be preached in all the world as a
witness to all nations and then the end
will come.” Matthew 24:14?”
“God does not ask us to do in our own
strength the work before us. He has
provided divine assistance for all the
emergencies to which our human resources
are unequal. He gives the Holy Spirit to help
in every strait, to strengthen our hope and
assurance, to illuminate our minds and
purify our hearts.” EGW, 8T 19
“… wait for the promise of the
Father…” and “you shall receive
power when the Holy Spirit has come
upon you; and you shall be witnesses
to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the end of the
earth.” Acts 1:4, 8
Christ’s Great Commission was accompanied
with a Great Promise …
If the Great Commission was given such
an accompanying Great Promise of
success, why are we not experiencing it
today?
Why is the promise of a repeated Pentecost
still not happening in our day?
Key Thought to Remember:
The mission of reaching lost
people with the everlasting
gospel is His mission. It is
not ours.
God invites us only to
cooperate with Him in
finishing His work and He
never asks us to do
anything that He does not
empower us to
accomplish.
“If the fulfilment of the promise is not seen as it
might be, it is because the promise is not
appreciated as it should be. If ALL WERE
WIILLING, ALL WOULD BE FILLED WITH
THE HOLY SPIRIT. Wherever the need of the
Holy Spirit is a matter little thought of, there is
seen spiritual drought, spiritual darkness,
spiritual declension and death.” EGW, AA 50.
“Whenever minor matters occupy the attention,
the divine power which is necessary for growth
and prosperity of the church, and with which
would bring all other blessings in its train, is
lacking, though offered in infinite plentitude.”
EGW, AA 50
If a genuine spiritual revival and
reformation is the GREATEST and
MOST URGENT of all our needs,
should we not as leaders place
priority on seeking Heaven’s
promised blessing with all our
hearts?
“Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change
in ideas and theories, habits and practices.
Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit of
righteousness unless it is connected with the revival
of the Spirit. Revival and Reformation are to do
their appointed work, and in doing this work they
must blend.” EGW, SM, bk. 1, p. 128
How Do We Achieve Revival
and Reformation?
Revival begins in the heart – the
mind, the emotions, the will. This results
from the indwelling of Christ in us.
St. Paul says: “If any man be in Christ, he
is a new creature: old things are passed
away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17.
A real reformation embraces
everything. St. Paul says: “Be not
conformed to this world: but be ye
transformed by the renewing of your
mind, that ye may prove what is that
good, and acceptable, and perfect,
will of God.” Romans 12:2.
Trying to achieve reformation merely by
correcting some externals may become
useless legalism. Real conversion begins
at the source of life, at the heart. The
opposite would be to try to heal a grave
physical ailment just by suppressing
pain, combating the symptoms, and
leaving active the pathological agent.
Mrs. White tells us that “circumstances cannot work
reforms. Christianity proposes a reformation in the
heart. What Christ works within, will be worked out
under the dictation of a converted intellect. The plan of
beginning outside and trying to work inward has always
failed and always will fail. God’s plan with you is to
begin at the very seat of all difficulties, the heart, and
then from out of the heart will issue the principles of
righteousness.” EGW, CD 35.
Only the Holy Spirit can change the heart.
He is always ready to work on behalf of
every person. The only reason why many
times He does not work is because the
human agent will not permit Him to do so.
The human part, insignificant though it
may appear to be, is indispensable.
How do we allow the Spirit of
God to work?
Here are two simple steps!!!
Step No. One:
Give the Spirit a chance to talk to you
and impress your mind with your
spiritual needs.
There exists only one way of offering the
Spirit this opportunity – exposing our
mind to Him in the quiet hour of
private study of the word – in the
Bible and the writings of Ellen G. White
– and in the calm moments of
private prayer.
This requires time. We need to include in
our daily schedule, preferably in the
morning before taking up our regular
duties, time enough to be alone with God
- reading, meditating, and speaking with
Him.
Is it too much to devote half an
hour to this vital devotion?
“Through the living and eternal word of God
you have been born again” 2 Peter 1:23, TEV.
The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. If
we read and meditate upon it for no other
purpose than to hear the voice of the Spirit,
He will speak to our heart.
The Word of God contains spiritual life.
The study or the hearing of the Word
sparked all revivals and reformations in
the past; in ancient Israel – for example in
the time of King Josiah – in the Protestant
Reformation days, in the time of the
Advent Movement, and in few years
subsequent to the 1888.
We should open our minds to the work of the
Spirit as faithfully as we eat material food. If
we become careless about our daily spiritual
food and our private prayer, we begin to lose
strength and vitality, and if we persist, we
die. On the other hand we increase the vigor
of our Christian life to the extent we practice
Bible Study and Private Prayer.
Step No. TWO:
Try to obey the prompting of
the Spirit.
St. Paul says…
“Quench not the Spirit” 2
Thessalonians 5:19
“Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God”
Ephesians 4:30
If He shows you a defect or weakness of
character and puts in you a desire to overcome
it, claim His help. With fervent prayer request
forgiveness and the presence of Christ, and
you will experience victory.
When He points out hate or bitterness in
your heart and prompts you to change
your sentiments, pray about it and act
with faith, and in the name of Jesus
forgive and put love in your heart.
As the Lord convinces you of selfishness,
worldliness, and indolence agonize in
prayer until God leads you in triumph
over them.
When can we have Revival – a revival
that results in a Reformation and
Transformation so needful in the
Church of Christ today?
Here is what Bishop WM F Anderson says …
“When Christians wear out more carpets around the
family altar than around the dressing table; When
Christians wear out more rubber tires calling on needy
homes than they wear out on pleasure trips; When
Christians stop bickering over little things, and have
fellowship in the spirit of divine love; When ‘My people,
which are called by my name, shall humble themselves
and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked
ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive
their sins, and heal their land” – then the revival will
come.
“When dad stays home from the club and
lodge; When mother stays away from the
amusement places and parties; When the
car is left in the garage long enough to cool
off; When the radio and television are
turned off long enough for the entire
family to tune in to God; then we shall
have revival.
“When preachers preach the Word of God,
rather than essays on philosophy and
psychology and the opinions of men; When
churches quit trying to hold together by means
of entertainment and picnics; When the folks
all get back in one accord, rather than discord;
then shall we have revival. In genuine humility
and submission, let us seek God’s face. We
must save our homes, our churches, our
country.” – Bishop WMF Anderson
When God’s people experience revival and
reformation, our methods of evangelism
will change.
We will become more resourceful and
innovative in our approach in witnessing
and evangelism.
We will continually seek new ideas, new
methods and techniques of sharing the good
news.
We shall be like Paul – becoming as a Greek
when he is with the Greeks; like a Roman
when he is with the Romans.
We will learn to apply the method of Jesus – as we
shall be convinced that “Christ’s methods alone will
give true success in reaching the people.”
1. He mingled with men
2. He desired their good
3. He showed sympathy for them
4. He ministered to their needs
5. He won their confidence
6. He bid them “Follow Me.”
EGW, MH 143
We will lead our people fulfil the great
commission ….
HEALING
PREACHING
TEACHING
BAPTISING
MAKING DISCIPLES
We shall teach our people how to do
missionary work and not just keep
sermonizing and doing the work ourselves.
We shall make our churches training
centers for evangelism.
We shall organize and mobilize more small
groups in our churches. We shall involve
our church members and not leave the
pastors and evangelists give all the Bible
Studies and do all the preaching.
“If I were the devil, I would make pastors and
administrators the center of the church work. It
must have been the devil who gave us the idea
that the pastor should do all the preaching, give
all the Bible studies, be the church’ primary soul
winner, and make and carry out business
decisions for the church.” “If I Were the Devil,”
SDA Historian George Knight, sermon at the 2000
GC Session in Toronto, Canada, AR, January 4,
2001, pp. 8 – 15.
“The watchful Christian is a working
Christian, seeking zealously to do all in his
power for the advancement of the gospel.
As love for his Redeemer increases, so also
does love for his fellow men.” EGW, AA 261
Maintenance Checklist to Keep
Your Ministry Healthy and on
Track:
1. Maintain your personal connection.
2. Maintain your personal vision.
3. Maintain your communication.
4. Maintain your enthusiasm.
5. Maintain your focus.
1. Maintain your personal
connection. Remind yourself often that
you are in a partnership ministry with the
Lord.
2. Maintain your personal
vision. Do you still sense the
importance of your ministry? Are your
goals as clear and as strong as they were
when you became involved in this
ministry?
3. Maintain your
communication. Regular reporting
is important to continued support. People are
busy, and they need to be reminded of how
this ministry is going and also of how they can
become involved.
4. Maintain your enthusiasm.
It is a true saying that “Nothing breeds
enthusiasm like enthusiasm.” Show your
continued excitement about your
ministry, and others will become excited
too.
5. Maintain your focus. Don’t
get sidetracked with other duties or
programs that will prevent you from
spending the time and energy that your
current ministry needs to survive and
grow.
“God might have committed the message
of the gospel, and all the work of loving
ministry, to the heavenly angels. But in His
infinite love He choose to make us co-
workers with Himself.” EGW, Steps to Christ,
p. 79.
Jesus says …
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears my voice and opens the
door, I will come in and eat with him, and
he with me. To him who overcomes, I will
give the right to sit with me on my throne,
just as I overcame and sat down with my
Father on His throne” Revelation 3:20, 21
A Vision of a Finished
Task…
“Servants of God, with their faces
lighted up and shining with holy
consecration, will hasten from place
to place to proclaim the message
from heaven. By thousands of
voices, all over the earth, the
warning will be given.
“Miracles will be wrought. The sick
will be healed, and signs and wonders
will follow the believers … The
message will be carried not so much by
arguments as by the deep conviction of
the Sprit of God.” EG White, The Great
Controversy, p. 612.
Thank You!
The End!

Presentation1.pptx - How to Achieve Revival and Reformation - MC - 2012.pptx

  • 3. The ultimate objective of the call for Revival and Reformation is to prepare the Church for the final harvest for God’s kingdom and usher in the return of our Lord Jesus.
  • 4. Today, the Church’s growth rate is simply not keeping pace with the world’s burgeoning population. An honest evaluation of our current evangelistic impact on the world leads to the conclusion that unless there is a dramatic change we will not complete Heaven’s assignment in this generation. In spite of our best efforts, all our plans, strategies, and resources are incapable of finishing God’s mission for His glory on earth.
  • 5. The Spiritual Need of the Church today: “God has given His ministers the message of truth to proclaim….The ministers have been seeking the hidden treasure and have been opening up the caskets and letting the jewels of truth shine forth, but the members of the church have not done a hundredth part of that which God requires of them.”
  • 6. World Statistics: In a single day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds – as the earth rotates around its axis, on average …. * 358, 522 babies are born * 155, 012 people die * 203, 520 people added to the world’s population
  • 7. The Earth’s population already reached 7 billion in June 2011 Currently, over a billion people live in China and India Continent of Africa has already reached 1 billion Of the 7 billion people – only approximately 30% or 2.2 billion are Christians
  • 8. There are 1.5 billion Muslims 1.1 billion secular, agnostics and atheists Almost 1 billion Hindus 376 million Buddhists
  • 9. Hundreds of other Religious Groups SDA is one of the fastest growing Christian denominations There are now more than 17 million members = approximately .77% of all the Christians Only .25 % or a small fraction of the world’s population
  • 10. Some thought-provoking questions: 1. How will the work of God on earth ever be finished? 2. Is it possible for the gospel in the context of the three angels’ messages to circle the globe in a relatively short time?
  • 11. 3. What will give us the breakthrough in the proclamation of the gospel that we long for? 4. When will we see the fulfilment of Jesus’ words: “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14?”
  • 12. “God does not ask us to do in our own strength the work before us. He has provided divine assistance for all the emergencies to which our human resources are unequal. He gives the Holy Spirit to help in every strait, to strengthen our hope and assurance, to illuminate our minds and purify our hearts.” EGW, 8T 19
  • 13. “… wait for the promise of the Father…” and “you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:4, 8 Christ’s Great Commission was accompanied with a Great Promise …
  • 14. If the Great Commission was given such an accompanying Great Promise of success, why are we not experiencing it today? Why is the promise of a repeated Pentecost still not happening in our day?
  • 15. Key Thought to Remember: The mission of reaching lost people with the everlasting gospel is His mission. It is not ours.
  • 16. God invites us only to cooperate with Him in finishing His work and He never asks us to do anything that He does not empower us to accomplish.
  • 17. “If the fulfilment of the promise is not seen as it might be, it is because the promise is not appreciated as it should be. If ALL WERE WIILLING, ALL WOULD BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Wherever the need of the Holy Spirit is a matter little thought of, there is seen spiritual drought, spiritual darkness, spiritual declension and death.” EGW, AA 50.
  • 18. “Whenever minor matters occupy the attention, the divine power which is necessary for growth and prosperity of the church, and with which would bring all other blessings in its train, is lacking, though offered in infinite plentitude.” EGW, AA 50
  • 19. If a genuine spiritual revival and reformation is the GREATEST and MOST URGENT of all our needs, should we not as leaders place priority on seeking Heaven’s promised blessing with all our hearts?
  • 20. “Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change in ideas and theories, habits and practices. Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousness unless it is connected with the revival of the Spirit. Revival and Reformation are to do their appointed work, and in doing this work they must blend.” EGW, SM, bk. 1, p. 128
  • 21. How Do We Achieve Revival and Reformation?
  • 22. Revival begins in the heart – the mind, the emotions, the will. This results from the indwelling of Christ in us. St. Paul says: “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.
  • 23. A real reformation embraces everything. St. Paul says: “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2.
  • 24. Trying to achieve reformation merely by correcting some externals may become useless legalism. Real conversion begins at the source of life, at the heart. The opposite would be to try to heal a grave physical ailment just by suppressing pain, combating the symptoms, and leaving active the pathological agent.
  • 25. Mrs. White tells us that “circumstances cannot work reforms. Christianity proposes a reformation in the heart. What Christ works within, will be worked out under the dictation of a converted intellect. The plan of beginning outside and trying to work inward has always failed and always will fail. God’s plan with you is to begin at the very seat of all difficulties, the heart, and then from out of the heart will issue the principles of righteousness.” EGW, CD 35.
  • 26. Only the Holy Spirit can change the heart. He is always ready to work on behalf of every person. The only reason why many times He does not work is because the human agent will not permit Him to do so. The human part, insignificant though it may appear to be, is indispensable.
  • 27. How do we allow the Spirit of God to work? Here are two simple steps!!!
  • 28. Step No. One: Give the Spirit a chance to talk to you and impress your mind with your spiritual needs.
  • 29. There exists only one way of offering the Spirit this opportunity – exposing our mind to Him in the quiet hour of private study of the word – in the Bible and the writings of Ellen G. White – and in the calm moments of private prayer.
  • 30. This requires time. We need to include in our daily schedule, preferably in the morning before taking up our regular duties, time enough to be alone with God - reading, meditating, and speaking with Him. Is it too much to devote half an hour to this vital devotion?
  • 31. “Through the living and eternal word of God you have been born again” 2 Peter 1:23, TEV. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. If we read and meditate upon it for no other purpose than to hear the voice of the Spirit, He will speak to our heart.
  • 32. The Word of God contains spiritual life. The study or the hearing of the Word sparked all revivals and reformations in the past; in ancient Israel – for example in the time of King Josiah – in the Protestant Reformation days, in the time of the Advent Movement, and in few years subsequent to the 1888.
  • 33. We should open our minds to the work of the Spirit as faithfully as we eat material food. If we become careless about our daily spiritual food and our private prayer, we begin to lose strength and vitality, and if we persist, we die. On the other hand we increase the vigor of our Christian life to the extent we practice Bible Study and Private Prayer.
  • 34. Step No. TWO: Try to obey the prompting of the Spirit.
  • 35. St. Paul says… “Quench not the Spirit” 2 Thessalonians 5:19 “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God” Ephesians 4:30
  • 36. If He shows you a defect or weakness of character and puts in you a desire to overcome it, claim His help. With fervent prayer request forgiveness and the presence of Christ, and you will experience victory.
  • 37. When He points out hate or bitterness in your heart and prompts you to change your sentiments, pray about it and act with faith, and in the name of Jesus forgive and put love in your heart.
  • 38. As the Lord convinces you of selfishness, worldliness, and indolence agonize in prayer until God leads you in triumph over them.
  • 39. When can we have Revival – a revival that results in a Reformation and Transformation so needful in the Church of Christ today? Here is what Bishop WM F Anderson says …
  • 40. “When Christians wear out more carpets around the family altar than around the dressing table; When Christians wear out more rubber tires calling on needy homes than they wear out on pleasure trips; When Christians stop bickering over little things, and have fellowship in the spirit of divine love; When ‘My people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and heal their land” – then the revival will come.
  • 41. “When dad stays home from the club and lodge; When mother stays away from the amusement places and parties; When the car is left in the garage long enough to cool off; When the radio and television are turned off long enough for the entire family to tune in to God; then we shall have revival.
  • 42. “When preachers preach the Word of God, rather than essays on philosophy and psychology and the opinions of men; When churches quit trying to hold together by means of entertainment and picnics; When the folks all get back in one accord, rather than discord; then shall we have revival. In genuine humility and submission, let us seek God’s face. We must save our homes, our churches, our country.” – Bishop WMF Anderson
  • 43. When God’s people experience revival and reformation, our methods of evangelism will change. We will become more resourceful and innovative in our approach in witnessing and evangelism.
  • 44. We will continually seek new ideas, new methods and techniques of sharing the good news. We shall be like Paul – becoming as a Greek when he is with the Greeks; like a Roman when he is with the Romans.
  • 45. We will learn to apply the method of Jesus – as we shall be convinced that “Christ’s methods alone will give true success in reaching the people.” 1. He mingled with men 2. He desired their good 3. He showed sympathy for them 4. He ministered to their needs 5. He won their confidence 6. He bid them “Follow Me.” EGW, MH 143
  • 46. We will lead our people fulfil the great commission …. HEALING PREACHING TEACHING BAPTISING MAKING DISCIPLES
  • 47. We shall teach our people how to do missionary work and not just keep sermonizing and doing the work ourselves. We shall make our churches training centers for evangelism.
  • 48. We shall organize and mobilize more small groups in our churches. We shall involve our church members and not leave the pastors and evangelists give all the Bible Studies and do all the preaching.
  • 49. “If I were the devil, I would make pastors and administrators the center of the church work. It must have been the devil who gave us the idea that the pastor should do all the preaching, give all the Bible studies, be the church’ primary soul winner, and make and carry out business decisions for the church.” “If I Were the Devil,” SDA Historian George Knight, sermon at the 2000 GC Session in Toronto, Canada, AR, January 4, 2001, pp. 8 – 15.
  • 50. “The watchful Christian is a working Christian, seeking zealously to do all in his power for the advancement of the gospel. As love for his Redeemer increases, so also does love for his fellow men.” EGW, AA 261
  • 51. Maintenance Checklist to Keep Your Ministry Healthy and on Track: 1. Maintain your personal connection. 2. Maintain your personal vision. 3. Maintain your communication. 4. Maintain your enthusiasm. 5. Maintain your focus.
  • 52. 1. Maintain your personal connection. Remind yourself often that you are in a partnership ministry with the Lord.
  • 53. 2. Maintain your personal vision. Do you still sense the importance of your ministry? Are your goals as clear and as strong as they were when you became involved in this ministry?
  • 54. 3. Maintain your communication. Regular reporting is important to continued support. People are busy, and they need to be reminded of how this ministry is going and also of how they can become involved.
  • 55. 4. Maintain your enthusiasm. It is a true saying that “Nothing breeds enthusiasm like enthusiasm.” Show your continued excitement about your ministry, and others will become excited too.
  • 56. 5. Maintain your focus. Don’t get sidetracked with other duties or programs that will prevent you from spending the time and energy that your current ministry needs to survive and grow.
  • 57. “God might have committed the message of the gospel, and all the work of loving ministry, to the heavenly angels. But in His infinite love He choose to make us co- workers with Himself.” EGW, Steps to Christ, p. 79.
  • 58. Jesus says … “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne” Revelation 3:20, 21
  • 59. A Vision of a Finished Task…
  • 60. “Servants of God, with their faces lighted up and shining with holy consecration, will hasten from place to place to proclaim the message from heaven. By thousands of voices, all over the earth, the warning will be given.
  • 61. “Miracles will be wrought. The sick will be healed, and signs and wonders will follow the believers … The message will be carried not so much by arguments as by the deep conviction of the Sprit of God.” EG White, The Great Controversy, p. 612.
