The State of Our Country <ul><li>Every year there are hundreds of thousands of people forced to live on the streets </li></ul><ul><li>Florida has one of the largest populations of homeless in the nation </li></ul><ul><li>There is reported to be nearly 86,000 individuals homeless in Florida at any given day </li></ul>
  3. 3. …Continued… <ul><li>60% of the homeless in Florida are single adults and the other 40% are families </li></ul><ul><li>37% of these families have young children </li></ul><ul><li>20% of the homeless are veterans </li></ul><ul><li>8% of the homeless are seniors </li></ul>
  4. 4. …Continued… <ul><li>In 2006, 37% of the homeless in Florida said it was their first time </li></ul><ul><li>29% of the homeless claimed it was their 2 nd or 3 rd time homeless </li></ul><ul><li>33% of the homeless claimed to have been homeless 4 or more times </li></ul><ul><li>The lengths of time being homeless varied, but 35% claimed to be homeless for a year or longer </li></ul>

Causes <ul><li>The causes of homelessness in Florida are as varied as the homeless themselves </li></ul><ul><li>Loss of a job, physical or mental illness, divorce, escape from domestic violence, drug/alcohol abuse are some causes </li></ul><ul><li>Main cause of homelessness is due to the fact that some cannot afford to live anywhere else but the streets with their monthly income </li></ul>

What is Florida doing to stop this? <ul><li>Florida State has government funded programs to service the homeless </li></ul><ul><li>Soup kitchens are all over Florida </li></ul><ul><li>Programs to offer temporary and permanent housing to the homeless available </li></ul><ul><li>Federal assistance for rent and income restricted housing available </li></ul>

Why Is It Not Working? <ul><li>Government funding is stretched very thin </li></ul><ul><li>Amount of homeless in need is larger than funds can handle </li></ul><ul><li>Many citizens wanting to help are uniformed about how and where they can help </li></ul><ul><li>Federal assistance is too competitive </li></ul><ul><li>61% of “extremely low-income” families spend at least half their income on rent each month </li></ul><ul><li>Most families needing rent assistance wait on average 6 months before they receive aid </li></ul>

How Do We Solve This? <ul><li>Volunteer in advocate organizations like food/clothes drives or volunteer at soup kitchens </li></ul><ul><li>Donate clothes to homeless shelters </li></ul><ul><li>Donate food to soup kitchens </li></ul><ul><li>Write letters offering ideas to solve this epidemic to state senators, representatives, governors and mayors </li></ul><ul><li>Donate money to homeless charities </li></ul>
  9. 9. If you were homeless… <ul><li>Wouldn’t you want someone to fight for you and help get you back on your feet? </li></ul><ul><li>That is all they want and need. </li></ul><ul><li>It is time to answer their call </li></ul><ul><li>End homelessness in Florida </li></ul>
