1. Brief history lesson – founded by Henry Tate in 1897 so that everyone could see art which, at the time, was mainly the reserved for privileged people in private house. Tate’s vision now is to ‘champion art and its value to society’. One of the key aims is to attract bigger and more diverse audiences and give them the opportunity to learn. Background to IK prize – process and results:
2. The IK Prize is awarded annually for an idea that uses innovative technology to enable the public to discover, explore and enjoy British art from the Tate collection in new ways. Creatives from across the digital and technology sectors are invited to submit short ‘elevator pitches’ in the autumn, from which a panel of industry experts selects a shortlist of four promising ideas. Candidates are then asked to submit detailed proposals before the winner is decided. The winner is awarded a £10,000 prize and a £60,000 production budget with which to turn their idea into a reality.

4. Health & safety: interesting risk assessment for Sensorium. Including food hygiene, biological hazards (from the fragrances), noise, vibrations and working with vulnerable people Touch - Touchless haptics work by using focused ultrasound from an array of speakers that vibrate on the visitor's hand. This will create a sensation of touch, and no gloves or special equipment is needed. Touchless haptics use technology developed by the company Ultrahaptics. Hear - Directional audio uses ultrasound waves to direct very precise sound waves across distances in a very precise manner. Listeners outside of the audio area will not be able to hear it, while for those inside the channel, the effect is similar to listening to headphones. Directional audio systems will be provided by Hypersound. Smell - Flying Object collaborated with IFF's olfactory design lab and perfumery team to produce bespoke scents, many created using 'living naturals' materials - captured through a Tenax™ trap or through liquefied gas extraction. Taste – in collaboration with Flying Object and Tate, master chocolatier and food inventor Paul A Young has developed an edible product that stimulates a haptic taste experience in response to the textural, painterly qualities and potential meanings of a specific artwork. Respond - Visitors will be given the option to measure their body’s response to the experience using wearable devices. These wristbands measure electrodermal activity, a measure of perspiration, which indicates how calm or excited wearers are. Tate Sensorium will be using E4 wristbands, provided by Empatica. Some of the most interesting results were those which seemingly had little in common – this made people look very closely at the images and the data which shows why the algorithm made the connection. In this case, a colourful image of people looking at a stock market index matched with a black and white image of a sad looking woman called ‘Meditation’ by William Edward Frost Why the match? Objects = 33% (white shirt, black hair) Faces = none (because non in the photo) Composition = 66% : surprisingly but makes sense on closer inspection. See the angle of the arms, the dark at the bottom of the images, band of white in the shirt. Context = 0 So just in the short space of time I have looked at these images in far more detail than I usually would. Someone with very little experience of art may have discovered new about composition…
9. Managing a competition winner – with a very technical idea – to operate within the museum boundaries, physical and curatorial. And helping curators and museum staff to manage a project which is very different from business as usual Aligning our objectives – to drive people into the galleries or engage online – with the winner and with the sponsor. We want the winner to deliver their idea and to enjoy the experience – not to feel like they are being bogged down with rules and ‘this is how we do things here’ Risks!
