  3. 3. The word “portfolio” often triggers fear and anxiety. Portfolio
  4. 4. What is a portfolio? <ul><li>An organized set of materials involved in or documenting a learning process and providing an opportunity for reflection. </li></ul><ul><li>According to the ACS- </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Portfolio = a record or archive </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Reflection = analysis of practice </li></ul></ul>

Some “Real World” examples <ul><li>Boy Scouts progress folder </li></ul><ul><li>Plastic Surgery board cases </li></ul><ul><li>Military training record </li></ul><ul><li>Numerous examples in academics </li></ul><ul><li>Dossiers in business and industry </li></ul><ul><li>Research portfolios for grad students </li></ul>

How should a portfolio be designed? <ul><li>Form follows function. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>First decide what the portfolio is supposed to do </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Then decide how the portfolio should achieve this goal </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>short term </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>long term </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>It is unlikely that a “one size fits all” approach will be satisfactory </li></ul>

What should a surgical portfolio accomplish? <ul><li>Serve as a continuous record of the attainment of expertise </li></ul><ul><li>Provide a convenient method for logging cases, outcomes, complications </li></ul><ul><li>Serve as a repository for materials that will be need for recertification (MOC)‏ </li></ul><ul><li>Provide an environment for analysis </li></ul><ul><li>( No, I didn’t use the “R” word- reflection)‏ </li></ul>

In the Words of the ACS <ul><li>Four key components: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>evidence of professional standing, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>commitment to lifelong learning, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>cognitive expertise, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>evaluation of performance in practice. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Caveats: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>surgeon driven </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>adds value to practice </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>replaces other regulatory measures </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. “ Ideal” Structure of a Portfolio? <ul><li>Two parts, one for documentation, one for individual use. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>documentation component </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>defined categories </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>drag and drop simplicity (with “translator)‏ </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>maps directly to relicensure and recertification </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>personal use component </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>user defined categories </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>interactive </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>easy to use </li></ul></ul></ul>

What do you mean by a “translator” <ul><li>Built in software that automatically translates an electronic file into Word, pdf, Excel, or html. </li></ul><ul><li>Allows the user to select any type of electronic information and have it converted into a standard format (scanned documents, electronic files, newly created documents, internet materials (searches, html, etc)‏ </li></ul><ul><li>ICD-9 codes, CPM codes and MeSH headings will be added as indicated </li></ul>

How will the surgeon use the portfolio? <ul><li>Surgeon will enter information EXACTLY as it will later be needed </li></ul><ul><ul><li>eliminates need to enter information at a later date </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Surgeon will drag and drop materials into appropriate repository bins as the materials are available. </li></ul><ul><li>Surgeon will later select materials to be transferred electronically into the MOC packet </li></ul><ul><li>User-defined environment: Active Learning Site with links, search engines, full text library, places to store articles, ACS Web Portal, other ACS sites </li></ul>

What Will the Surgical Portfolio Include? <ul><li>Degrees, Licenses, Board Certification </li></ul><ul><li>CME certificates and documentation </li></ul><ul><li>Surgical case logs </li></ul><ul><li>Complication report and analysis </li></ul><ul><li>Provider specific practice data </li></ul><ul><li>“ Gap Analysis” </li></ul><ul><li>Evaluations and recommendations </li></ul><ul><li>Core competency assessment </li></ul>

Who Will Control the Portfolio? <ul><li>The surgeon </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The surgeon will have full control over what material is placed in the portfolio </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(although the Board may dictate what should be there, the surgeon will be in charge of what actually goes in)‏ </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The surgeon will have full control over what is transferred into the Board MOC application package. </li></ul></ul>
