What are some things you already know about King Arthur?
There is debate on whether King Arthur was a real person, or just a legendary figure. Let's take a look at some information and see if we can figure this out...
<ul><ul><li>King Arthur’s History </li></ul></ul><ul><li>He was the son of Uther Pendragon and Igraine of Cornwall. </li></ul><ul><li>He is said to have taken the thrown after his father passed away, Arthur earned his title as "King of the Britains". </li></ul><ul><li>He was the King of the Celtic Kingdom around the fifth century. </li></ul><ul><li>In early stories he is said to have been a military leader, and in later ones he is a king or emperor. </li></ul>
What is a legend? A legend is a written or spoken narrative that could realistically have happened. They may include miracles that are believed to have happened according to a certain set of beliefs people may have.
According to the Legend of King Arthur... <ul><li> Arthur was born in very troubled times </li></ul><ul><li>Merlin, a wise magician advised Arthur's parents to send away their baby to live in a secret and safe place </li></ul><ul><li>There were many question of who would be the King of England during this time period </li></ul><ul><li>To prevent an unqualified man from taking the throne, Merlin used his magic to set a sword into a piece of stone. </li></ul>
Legend <ul><li>Legend has it that as a child Arthur pulled a sword out of an anvil, a task that no grown man could do. This event is what made Arthur King. </li></ul><ul><li>King Arthur's sword was named "Excalibur" because it was thought to have magical powers that aided him in every battle. </li></ul><ul><li>Merlin is a wizard who is said to have been King Arthur's close advisor. </li></ul>

Whether or not King Arthur really existed is hard to say, but the stories that are told of him have made a strong impact on much of the literature of the Middle ages, as well as the literature that we read today.
