Slavery: The early days <ul><li>Slavery can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, circa 1760 BC. </li></ul><ul><li>Slavery has been found in almost every culture, including Sumer. </li></ul><ul><li>How slaves were determined was by race, color, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>If a country takes another, usually it’s city's population becomes slaves, like when the Babylonians conquered the Assyrians. </li></ul>

  4. 4. Apartheid: The early days <ul><li>Apartheid started much later, tracing back to 1894. Believe it or not, the British started what we now know is apartheid. </li></ul><ul><li>They started it by passing the General Pass Regulations Bill. </li></ul><ul><li>Apartheid was mainly in South Africa, but there have been many isolated cases. </li></ul><ul><li>Apartheid only lasted about 40-50 years. </li></ul>

Slavery: Heading into South Africa <ul><li>Slavery in Africa started in the 16 th century </li></ul><ul><li>Most slaves were shipped in from the Arabian peninsula. </li></ul><ul><li>Most preferred female slaves instead of male ones. </li></ul><ul><li>The Atlantic slave trade picked up in the late 18 th century. </li></ul><ul><li>The triangular system was extremely organized. </li></ul>

Apartheid: The main times <ul><li>South Africa picked up apartheid in 1948. </li></ul><ul><li>Most laws were passed between 1948 and 1970. </li></ul><ul><li>Some examples are the Bantu Education Act, Immortality Act, and the Terrorism Act. </li></ul><ul><li>All acts passed (there were 25) limited black’s rights. </li></ul>

  10. 10. Apartheid: Main Abolition <ul><li>Apartheid was abolished by many groups and people, with Mandela being the most famous. </li></ul><ul><li>Steven Biko failed. He was clubbed by the police, and died 3 days later, on 9/12/1977. </li></ul><ul><li>The legal aspect of apartheid was abolished in 1991. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1993, de Klerk and Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize. </li></ul><ul><li>Mandela was elected president in April of 1994. </li></ul>
