  3. 3. A brief history of UC Berkeley and Doe Library The University of California at Berkeley was established as the flagship campus of the Campus in 1868. The Doe Memorial Library building was completed in 1911and holds our major portion of Russian, Central Asian and Eastern European collections in both Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines. The other important repository of materials related to Russia and the Far East are the East Asian and Biosciences libraries. Currently, there are more than 10 million books in the UC Berkeley Library. In Doe Library, we have 5,500 current periodicals titles from all regions of the world.
  4. 4. History of Russian Collections • The major impetus to the development of Russian collections came after the World War II as the Area Studies librarianship evolved. • Initially the focus was to acquire the printed books and periodicals from the Soviet Union and the other Soviet bloc countries. However, as the collection grew, the focus also shifted on acquiring materials that were published in the 19th century Russian Empire. • The interest in the Far East of Russia, Siberia, Central Asia and China has been always at the heart of the collection development at UC Berkeley due to its location on the Pacific Rim of the United States. • The current focus is also on collecting comprehensively materials that are published in Russia on China and Sino-Russian, Sino-Soviet relations. • I also focus on collecting Russian Émigré publications from Chinese cities such as Harbin, Shanghai, etc. • I plan to collect extensively Uighur language materials in future.
  5. 5. Russian language collections • As of June 1, 2013, we have in our holdings a total of 237,098 monographic titles and 6,867 serial titles in Russian.
  6. 6. Electronic Databases in Russian Collection at UC Berkeley • At UC Berkeley, as a part of Russian collections, I subscribe to various online full- text article databases. Some important examples are Izvestiia Archive (1917-2012), Literaturnaia Gazeta Archive (1929-2011), Pravda Digital Archive (1912-2011). • The Stalin Digital Archive is a result of collaboration between the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI) and Yale University Press (YUP) to create an electronic database of finding aids, to digitize documents and images, and to publish in different forms and media materials from the recently declassified Stalin archive in the holdings of RGASPI.
  7. 7. Russian Materials Acquisitions • Vendors of Russian Materials in Russia, Europe and the United States- MIPP Books, East View, RUSKNIGA, RUDOMINO, BENRAN, etc. • Russian Book Exchanges at UC Berkeley account for 40% of acquisitions activity. Exchanges include serials exchanges and barter monographic exchanges with institutions in the Russian Federation. For example, Russian State Library, ANSO (Academy of Sciences- Sibirksoe Otdelenie). • Exchanges with the other US and Canadian Institutions through SLAVIC Librarians group.

  12. 12. Collaborative collection development for Russian and other Eastern European materials • UC Berkeley – Stanford Collaborative Collection Development for Russian and East European Collection. Reasons: Geographical proximity, Non-duplication of academic research level publication, Dedicated budgets for each country of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Ability to provide regional focus. For example, UC Berkeley Library focuses on collecting anything published on China, Japan and Korea in Russia and the former Eastern bloc countries. Stanford focuses on collecting the Caucasus related materials.
  13. 13. 15. 15. The Center for Research Libraries (www.crl.edu) • The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is an international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries. Founded in 1949, CRL supports advanced research and teaching in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences by preserving and making available to scholars the primary source material critical to those disciplines (source: about the CRL). • CRL acquires and preserves newspapers, journals, documents, archives, and other traditional and digital resources from a global network of sources. Most materials acquired are from outside the United States, and many are from five ―emerging‖ regions of the world: Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Latin America (source: about CRL).
