1950s Horror Mutant creatures and Alien invaders
The History It was the 1950’s that saw the first introduction of science fiction horror pictures The earliest sci-fi horror was in 1951 ‘The thing from another world’ After WW2 people wanted more entertainment than the usual human faces attached to evil This is where Abbott and Costello became popular creating ‘Mutant Madness’
Introduction Most of these films where low-budget black-and-white B-movies, which would precede the main "colour" feature, now that black-and-white was quickly being replaced in the movie industry, although many of these B-movies still managed to achieve huge cult status in later years. the 1950's that saw the introduction of science fiction horror pictures. The rising demand for science fiction resulted in very few dedicated horror movies being released at first, although many film makers still tailored their Sci-Fi picture's towards the horror market to appeal to the drive-in movie couples
Industry Most of these films where low-budget black-and-white B-movies which would precede the main "colour" feature black-and-white was quickly being replaced in the movie industry Many B-movies still managed to achieve huge cult status in later years.
Genre Changes In the 1950s I change to a more sci-fi genre with such films as ‘war of the worlds’ and ‘The day the earth stood still’. However there was still a market for monsters from Earth such as ‘Dracula’ ‘Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ and ‘ Hound of the Baskerville’
