  5. 5. Dedications & AcknowledgementsI dedicate this book to my late father, Judge Louis Esselen, who loved and playedgolf for most of his life. He introduced me to golf at the age of 5 and I am so gladhe did.Little did he know that I would one day make a career out of golf and write a book!Bless him for encouraging and imparting his golfing wisdom to me. I am mostgrateful. Thanks to my wife, Doreen, for her patience and understanding, and for allowingme the time to painstakingly write and publish this book. I especially want to thankher for taking most of the photos, and although she is a novice, she did a great job!
  6. 6. How To Use This BookThank you for purchasing “ Classic Golf Swing Lessons” –Improve GolfingTechniques Instantly With Proven Golf Swing Drills. This book is my accumulation of tried and tested golf swing drills used with mystudents over the years. They are genuinely “instant,” and I am sure you will enjoythe same experience.I strongly recommend starting the lessons in the sequence set out here. This willmake sure you do not miss an important step in building or improving your golfswing. The quickest way to learn a motor skill is by repeating the movement over andover- again. Repetition after all is “the mother of learning.” Permanent changesare more likely and happen much quicker because you are also able to “feel” themovement. The object of this book is to help you feel the correct movements and becomemore aware of the correct movements through the exercises I have provided. There are over 100 photos demonstrating the exercise drills. Do not be fooled bytheir simplicity. They are tested, proven and effective. Important words andphrases are italicized for your benefit. Re –read them if necessary, and mostimportantly try to understand what you need to do before attempting themovement.Should you need any help with any part of this book, you have my full support fora 3 month period from your date of purchase. Contact me atlouis@golfswingfeeling.comI hope you enjoy the book as much as I have enjoyed writing it, I am positive youwill experience a better understanding of your swing, and see improvement fromthe exercises presented here.I look forward to hearing of your successes!Cheers to great golfing improvement!Louis Esselen Classic Golf Swing Lessons – Copyright © Louis Esselen. 7. 7. Classic Golf Swing Lessons P a g e | 74Here is your Free lesson - EnjoyLESSON 14 - Understanding Swing PlaneMany golfers never realise the importance of the swing plane and the effect it hason your ball flight. By now you should have developed and practiced the allimportant basic fundamentals for building a sound swing. My aim in this lesson isfor you to gain a better understanding of your swing plane, know how to find it,and be able to correct any problems you may have. This is easy to achieve with the excellent exercise drill I have for you. It will helpyou develop your own perfect swing plane.Swing plane influences the direction you hit a shot, and the swing path of the clubhead is travelling in. These are two vital elements for obtaining consistency. If theclub face angle is not facing your intended target at impact, and the swing planeand path are not correct, you are going to experience an offline shot. The best way to describe the swing plane is to stand behind a player from a downthe line view and visualize a line drawn from the ball up through the base of hisneck. The best description of the swing plane to date is Ben Hogan’s description. Hedescribed the swing plane by imagining a pane of glass (the size of a sliding glassdoor) parallel to your toe line, but resting on the target line where the ball is,leaning it over till it rests on either side of your shoulders, (assume a hole for yourhead is made) at about a 45 degree angle. The feeling you want to have is to swing the arms and club parallel to the pane ofglass on the back swing and down swing without letting your arms or the clubcross over and break the pane at any stage of the swing.Check the photos below where I am demonstrating this line and I have drawnanother line below it to show where the arms and club should swing in a goodswing plane. The general idea is to swing the club and arms inside both “panes of glass” Classic Golf Swing Lessons – Copyright © Louis Esselen. 8. 8. Classic Golf Swing Lessons P a g e | 75without the arms and club moving outside the two lines, nor loop in an anti clockwise direction with the hands on the way down but swing parallel to both lines. Allthis may seem easier said than done but many golfers struggle because they don’tknow how to do this.I have a great exercise to help you find yourcorrect swing plane. You need to understandthat no players swing plane is the same sincewe all have different builds, strength andflexibility. The spine angle we create when standingover the ball determines the plane we swingthe arms and club. How far we stand fromthe ball also determines the spine angle takenat address. To me it makes no difference if you swingflatter or upright, as long as you can do itconsistently keeping the arms and clubbetween those to panes of glass. 9. 9. Classic Golf Swing Lessons P a g e | 76Let’s take a look at how you can easily do what I am talking about here with thisgreat exercise.Swing Plane ExerciseThis easy to do swing plane exercise will get you into the correct swing plane in notime at all. Practice in front of a mirror as often as needed and you will be strikingthe ball with pinpoint accuracy in no time. Before you take up your address with the club ( I am using a 5 iron here). Cock theright wrist back on to your right forearm first. Get use to this movement firstbefore moving on.Got it?Now take up your address with a club and cock both wrists back keeping the armsstill in their original address position. The shaft of the club is more or less in a parallel position to the ground. Rightelbow folded inwards towards the side of your body. Classic Golf Swing Lessons – Copyright © Louis Esselen. All Rights Reserved – First Edition
  10. 10. Classic Golf Swing Lessons P a g e | 77Swing the arms up allowing your shoulders to turn as fully as possible. What youwill now feel is the perfect top of the back swing position for your club. The shaftparallel to your intended target line, the left wrist and thumb underneath the handleof the club, and the leading edge of the clubface parallel to your left forearm. Seemiddle photo and the one on the right above. Now, from a top of the backswing position you want tobring the arms and club backdown again in a reverse order. What I mean by reverse is,the lower body needs to lead, pulling the arms and club downto the same place they startedin. Allow the weight to transferback to your left side. The right shoulder will dropdownwards with this move.Make sure you open the hips to the target as much as possible while the shoulders“square” up to the ball.Action plan Classic Golf Swing Lessons – Copyright © Louis Esselen. 11. 11. Classic Golf Swing Lessons P a g e | 78Repeat the movement I have described at least three times. On the fourth timerelease the club and finish the swing with your body fully turned to the left side.Face the target with all your weight over the left foot. There is no manipulation of the club with the hands in the back swing. This drill isa very effective one to practice. Many top pros use it to solve swing planeproblems, and club head path through impact. Here is another bonus for you. This swing exercise serves two purposes. The second half helps with another important move in the golf swing and you canpractice these two swing exercise drills together to build the correct down swingsequence of movements for your swing.Let’s go..Once at the top of your swing move the arms, club down to the position it startedin. Make sure your weight transfers to the left side, hips open up, right shoulderstays back and both shoulders are parallel to your target.Right elbow moves in front of your right hip and club is back to the same positionit was in the beginning of the exercise. Repeat the move by swinging the arms backup to the top and come down again. Repeat a few more times and you will bebuilding two powerful moves into your swing. End of Free Chapter **********I trust you enjoyed this free informative lesson on swing plane.Easy right! The key is to repeat it enough times so it sticks in your memory andyou will be surprised how quickly you can incorporate the moves into your swing.Do you want more easy exercises to improve your swing and game?
