Harry Winston (1896 - 1978), The King of diamonds of luxury, glamour and
elegance ... Here's what inspires each creation of one of the largest jewelers in
the twentieth century.
Harry Winston. Born in Ukraine in 1896, he learned the trade of jeweler with his
father who has just opened a boutique in New York. This new home and
boundless energy that emerges from this city became a Harry Winston of its main
sources of inspiration and driving force of his greatest masterpieces.
In 1932, he founded the company-Harry Winston Inc. and bought the jewelry
collection of Arabella Huntington’s millionaire heiress to the railroad magnate
Henry Huntington. This purchase would be decisive in the career of the jeweler
who made the choice to the taste of New York. This outdated jewelry was
created by Cartier in particular, but with a remarkable quality of the stones.
At this point, Winston would make revolutionary in their design jewelry such as
necklaces on flexible plate waving mesh with the movements of the person
wearing them. It will then be surrounded by colleagues who would develop its
matchless style and provide the high society personalities of international fame.
His nickname "The King of Diamonds" is that it was in the hands of stone as the
prestigious and legendary Hope and Oppenheimer. He made the diamond a
full-fledged art in surrounding himself with gemologists, designers and craftsmen
who were able, in its recommendations, to make this stone a real sculpture.
Each piece of jewelry signed Harry Winston is the subject of a meticulous study
of gems in order to give all the jewelry its uniqueness and extraordinariness.
Objects of all fantasies, the masterpieces of Harry Winston have become true
symbols embodied in the cinema in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Marilyn
Monroe which includes in his song Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend these
words: "Talk to me , Harry Winston, tell me all about it. "
Passion, power, money, recognition ... other words that evoke the works created
by Harry Winston, legendary artist who has developed a timeless aesthetic
