  1. 1. The Order of Mary Ward Award Information and CriteriaMary Ward was born in Yorkshire, England, on January 23, 1585. Her desire toenter a religious community eventually resulted in the founding of her ownInstitute. Her concept of religious life for women in the 17th century was radicalas it proposed, among other things, freedom from enclosure and governance bya woman. She desired to promote women’s role in the Church because shebelieved “that women in time to come will do much.” At her death on January30, 1645, Mary Ward’s Institute had been suppressed and she had beencondemned an heretic.Today her Sisters minister to the poor, especially women and children, on fivecontinents and in forty-five countries. Her vision, her charisma, and her couragecontinue to inspire women and men to witness to Christ with justice, freedom,and integrity.Mary Ward saw the need to educate young girls to preserve the faith, especially in England, andfounded her Institute to promote that end. “Besides attending to our own perfection, we desire in thesecond place, to devote ourselves with all diligence and prudent zeal to procure the salvation of ourneighbour, by means of education of young girls or by any other means that are congruous to the timesor in which it is judged that we can by our labours further the propagation of our Holy Mother, theCatholic Church.”“Work with great tranquility, joy, magnanimity for what is not done in one year can be done inanother.” (Mary Ward) Criteria1. What is the Order of Mary Ward?The Order of Mary Ward is the highest honour that the Loretto Alumnae Association can bestow on anindividual. This award is given in honour of Mary Ward and is conferred upon one who displays thosequalities we most admired in her–joy, freedom, love of the poor, and a desire for justice. The recipientshould be one who serves as a role model to students taught in Loretto Schools or in the Lorettotradition and who makes a significant contribution to society through her spiritual, academic, creativeand social gifts. Service to others, respect for religious values, and appreciation of her Alma Matershould be evident.In addition, the Loretto Alumnae Association shall ensure that the name, photo and brief biography ofeach recipient of the Order of Mary Ward will be entered on the “Wall of Distinction” to be located atLoretto Abbey, Toronto. page 1
  2. 2. 2. Who pays for the actual “award”?Any costs associated with the Award will be the responsibility of the Loretto Alumnae Association. TheAward shall consist of a plaque with the appropriate inscription, including: Order of Mary Ward, thename of the recipient and the date the Award is bestowed.3. When and where is the Order of Mary Ward awarded?The Order of Mary Ward shall be awarded annually in November at the Mary Ward Tribute Evening andheld in the Auditorium at Loretto Abbey. Recipients will be asked to address those in attendance.4. Who is eligible to receive the Order of Mary Ward?The following are eligible to receive the Order of Mary Ward: (a) A member of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (b) Alumnae of a Loretto School (c) Former Staff Member of a Loretto School (d) Friends of Loretto5. Who can nominate a potential recipient?The following persons can submit the name of a nominee for the Order of Mary Ward: (a) Members of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (b) Loretto Alumnae (c) Former Staff Member of a Loretto School (d) Friends of Loretto6. How is the nomination handled?The Nomination Form is available for download at: http://www.slideshare.net/lorettoalumnae.Information also can be obtained from the Loretto Alumnae Association. Nominations must besubmitted to the Association by March 30 and addressed to Loretto Abbey, 101 MasonBoulevard,Toronto, Ontario, M5M 3E2 and/or lorettoalumnae@gmail.com 7. Who determines the recipients of the Order of Mary Ward?The Loretto Alumnae Association Executive Committee.Those not selected will be considered the following year.8. Who determines the number of recipients for the Order of Mary Ward?The recipients shall be selected by June 30. The Order of Mary Ward will be awarded to nomore than three persons in one year. page 2

Role of Recipients of the Order of Mary Ward: (a) Availability and willingness to support the existing students of Loretto Schools in career development and mentoring–including participation in career days, job shadowing, work placements and addressing graduates. (b) Agree to support and encourage the development of Loretto in its mission statement with the ultimate goal of enriching the community, following the teachings of Mary Ward and acting as a model/mentor for the next generation of graduates from Loretto Schools, Toronto with the ultimate goal of enriching the community.11.
