“… the day for Deepali started at 4 in the morning till late in the evening. Inspite of working for so many years, her monthly salary was two hundred rupees only (equivalent to $4). But this too was not given to her directly, as her employee used to tell her that they had already paid the full amount to her parents… Deepali’s employer used to physically torture and beat her if she could not perform her work well”
THE COLLECTIVE VOICES PROJECT
The Collective Voices program represents an important milestone for Mary Ward International.
The program was launched on the 8th March 2009; International Women's Day
Empowerment!
EMPOWERING women to take an active part in their communities development and planning.
The women will be EMPOWERED through knowing their rights and entitlements.
Education!
The money we raise from Loreto Day will go towards EDUCATING these young women which will in turn ensure that they become aware of the government schemes available to them, allowing them to take advantage of the collective voices project.
Opportunity!
The collective voices project provides women with countless OPPORTUNITIES, including:

An education
The OPPORTUNITY to participate in every aspect of social development schemes.
And the OPPORTUNITY to access beneficial government schemes, for example, childbirth aid.

Strength!
The program aims at bringing the stakeholders (women/children/adolescents, service providers and local government) closer together. In doing so, women will be provided with the STRENGTH and support needed to improve their lifestyles and make a mark on their community.
The money raised will itself provide much needed STRENGTH to the women of Darjeeling.
Through the collective voices project, 25 year old AartiToppo came to know about a government scheme with financial maternity benefits… she was admitted to hospital for her delivery, accompanied by her program supervisor and within 15 days of the delivery, Aarti received the money.
“… earlier when I had my first child, I had no idea about such schemes, but now with help, I have got the money…”
She now tells other women in her community about the scheme.
