  4. 4. Introduction  Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson  Born on 18th July 1950 in Blackheath, London.  He is an English business magnate and investor.  Founder & CEO of Virgin Group which contains around 300 companies of cost over $ 25 billion and total 55,000 employees. 4

How he began from bottom to top  At the age of16, dropped out from school and moved to London and launch “Student Magazine”, which did relatively more success.  At the age of 19, founded the “Virgin mail order record company”. Success In selling mail order records, opening of a record shop then launched own record label i.e. Virgin Records. 5 1980s  Virgin Record goes international.  Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin cargo are launched.  launched Virgin Airship & Balloon Company. 1990s  Virgin Megastore arrives in Japan.  Virgin Publishing(Virgin Books) is formed.  Virgin Express –an European low cost train –is launched in Brussels.  Virgin Mobile launches Virgin’s first Telecom Ventures. 2000s  Virgin launches Virgin Blue.  Virgin launches Virgin Galactic.  Virgin launches Virgin Health Bank.  Virgin becomes the first commercial airline to fly a 747 on bio fuel as we demonstrated it in flight.

Business philosophy  Fun is at the core of how I like to do business.  Fun is the secret of Virgin’s success.  Business is not a recipe which could be imitated.  The more you’re actively and practically engaged, the more successful you will feel.  You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.  Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming. 9
  10. 10. Tips for business  Branson said that he did not run his businesses by strategies. Instead, he keeps a “to do” list, that he writes at the beginning of each day.  Size dose matter : you need to challenge and compete with big brands to become big yourself.  Haggle : everything is negotiable.  Take it easy, mix fun with work.  Mingle like a common man, go ahead like a bullet.  Be camera friendly. 10

Personal life  Branson is also known for his personal adventures…  In 1986, smashed the world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by using Virgin Atlantic Challenger.  In 1987/1991, crossed the Atlantic ocean in the Virgin Atlantic Flyer, which was the first and largest hot air balloon.  In 2004, set a record by crossing the English channel between Britain and France on an amphibious vessel. 12

Awards & Achievements  In 1993, Mr Branson was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Technology from Loughborough University.  In 2000, Branson received the Tony Jannus Award for his accomplishments in commercial air transportation.  In 2007's Time Magazine ranked his as a Top 100 Most Influential People in the World.  In 2014, Branson received the 2014 Business for Peace Award. 13
