  2. 2. RISE OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE  In the late thirteenth century, a new Muslim empire rose led by Osman I  The land for the Ottoman Empire was given to Osman I by Seljuk F.Y.I. This was for driving the Mongols out OSMAN I

LIFE AS A MINORITY IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE…  You were able to practice your religion  You were not required to serve in the military  Instead you paid a “head tax”  You could have high level jobs if you converted to Islam  Minority communities ruled themselves with a millet  The millet then answered to the ruling class F.Y.I. After you convert, you could gain power, even as high as Grand Vizier, second in command
  4. 4. GOVERNMENT  The Sultan was the supreme leader and believed to be appointed by God  The Wealthy class formed the Aristocracy  The Average People consist of both Muslims and non-Muslims  The lowest group is the people not respected at all

MILITARY  One of the strongest and most feared militaries of the time  Extremely advanced weapons  People of other religion who converted were used in the military  Ottoman soldiers were motivated by the fact that this was a Jihad or Holy War F.Y.I One of the most feared fighting groups, The Janissaries, were entirely Christian Converts F.Y.I. According to Muslim beliefs if you die for allah you get 72 virgins in the Afterlife

  8. 8. FALL OF THE OTTOMANS  Under Suleiman the Magnificent the Ottomans reached their zenith  After Suleiman, Sot the Drunk came to power  With him came an internal decline in the aristocracy  Internal problems along with WWI caused the Ottoman empire to disappear
