The Basics of Population

  1. 1. Population – a group of people living in a  particular place at a specified time. The scientific study of population is called  demography.
  2. 2. Many factors are used to study population:   size, distribution, composition, and age  structure. Demographers analyze 3 main processes: • Fertility • Mortality • Migration.
  3. 3. Fertility – measures the actual # of children  born to a woman or to a population of  women. The rate varies from country to country.
  4. 4. Mortality refers to death within a  population. • To analyze mortality, we look at life span and  life expectancy.
  5. 5. Life span – biological • the most advanced age to which humans can  survive. Life expectancy – cultural • the avg. # of years that persons in a given  population born at a particular time can expect  to live.
  6. 6. Migration – the movement of people from  one geographic area to another. • “pull factors” – what keeps someone in a place • “push factors” – what send someone away
  7. 7. •Growth rates are  •Fast population  •Growth is slow •Low crude birth  slow growth rate  •Low crude death  rate. •High birth rate.  •Fall in crude death  •Low crude death  rate. More living In  rate •Short life  •Crude birth rate  expectancy middle age. declines drastically •Higher dependency  ratio •Life expectancy  Examples Examples rises. •Longer life  Scotland before 1760 Scotland 1870 ‐1950 expectancy •Infant mortality  New Guinea Algeria rate falls. Remote parts of Tunisia Examples Amazonia Morocco Scotland today Examples Japan Scotland 1760 ‐ 1830 USA Republic of Congo
  8. 8. If the pyramid has a wide base… • Usually agricultural, with problems of  overpopulation. • Many dependents
  9. 9. The country needs to… • ↑ food production • ↑ homes & schools • Plan for more job opportunities for the young
  10. 10. Nigeria - 1995
  11. 11. If the pyramid has a narrow base… • Low birth rate • Low death rate The country needs to… • Encourage families • Think about hiring foreign labor • Have proper medical services & health care for  the aged
