Editor's Notes
My Action Research project for a master’s in Education, Media, Design, and Technology at Full Sail Online University was about integrating digital media into Project Based Learning in my science classes. I will show you three examples that were part of my research. The projects were conducted at a public middle school in southern California with approximately 150 students. I also conducted a Summer Technology Seminar where a group of students were allowed to explore and evaluate technology. The seminar participants taught me a great deal about their thoughts about learning. http://web.me.com/lmerrill4640/site/Action_Research.html
Based on an extensive literature review and a year long action research project where new forms of media were integrated into the science curriculum, I discovered that: 1. Project Based Learning is a relevant pedagogy that is used extensively throughout the world and generates excellent results for change in local communities and high level learning for students backed with improved test scores 2. Students perform better when they have an authentic audience outside the school setting and 3. The cell phone is the tool students believe will REVOLUTIONIZE education. Students of this digital, global generation EXPECT educators to integrate cell phones into the curriculum and to do it soon. Read more about Project Based Learning at the Buck Institute of Education http://www.bie.org/tools
Along with the facts that Project Based Learning, if done correctly, is relevant education and that it is enhanced when there is an authentic audience, Project Based Learning also allows students to practice 21 Century Skills.
This is an updated version of the familiar Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Domains that includes digital media. Highest on the scale under creating we find filming, animating, blogging, video blogging, mixing, remixing, wiki-ing, publishing, videocasting, podcasting, directing, producing, and programming. Several of these words are so new that spellcheck still does not recognize them. Along with hypothesizing and experimenting for the evaluating domain there is also Alpha and Beta testing, and for analyzing (misspelled) there is mashing, mixing, cracking, and validating reverse-engineering. Skyping and twittering are new additions. Who knows what will come next. What we do know is these skills are essential for educated citizens.
The 21st Century classroom could become the media center where works, created off campus, are shown for peer and teacher review. Opportunities for improvement can be suggested and modifications can easily be made before the final products are presented and cataloged into ePortfolios. There is still plenty to do in the classroom, experiments, brainstorming exercises, discussions, collaborations, role plays, and much more. One reason works may have to be created off campus is the interference caused by our current school filters. No filter will ever be perfect so a paradigm shift will be required for better Internet access on campus to be achieved.
Project Based Learning example number 1 Earth Day In The Park “Green” your community.
Relevant Education: I believe students do care about protecting life on Earth. Our school is at the foothills of the Condor Refuge so when a biologist tells kids that their shiny granola wrappers create microtrash that can kill a condor, it does offer them the opportunity to make the right choice the next time they throw away their trash.
Authentic Audience: when the audience is their local community of families and friends, expectations soar and the quality of work improves.
Students perform searches on their tool of choice, cell phones, for Project Based Learning. The small size of the screen does not bother these digital kids. They see cell phones as tools for getting the job done. An added benefit is that students with smart phones, phones with Internet, are perfectly happy to perform searches for their friends who do not have smart phones. The atmosphere is collaborative. http://www.cellphonesinlearning.com/
Students create and share Glogsters, on cell phones and class Wikis. and have fun doing it. Students are highly motivated to learn when they can use their cell phones. Because I was conducting research for Full Sail University I had special permission from parents to experiment with cell phones and other technology in the classroom that is not normally allowed under our current school policies. Changing those policies is my next major hurdle. Please let me know if you have jumped and landed safely over your own policy hurdles. http://www.glogster.com/
Students create Bilingual Vokis and share them using cell phones. This is a bulldog explaining the benefits of spaying and neutering pets. http://www.voki.com/
This is a short video created by a student, shot at the park for Earth Day. These students were introducing to the local community, Solar Panel Backpacks, that will charge your cell phone and laptop as you walk. http://www.v-dimension.com/en/products/view.php?prod=V-DIM-HELIUS
Our Wikis are in the infancy stage but we are working on them. I might have to rename them to FMS Earth Day Movie and Photo Galleries to encourage visits. ‘Wiki sounds like Windex” is what one of my students said. http://www.wikispaces.com/content/for/teachers
Project Based Learning Example #2 Convert School Parking Lot To Wildlife Habitat to providefood, water, shelter, and space for many local species Our target species is the California Scrub Jay. http://www.nwf.org/At-School.aspx
Relevant Education: Every day students walk through the habitat on their way to class so we have a daily opportunity for observations. http://www.nwf.org/Global-Warming/School-Solutions/Eco-Schools-USA/Our-Partners/SchoolTube.aspx
Authentic Audience: Register Habitat with National Wildlife Federation National recognition can go a long way to motivate kids. http://www.nwf.org/Get-Outside/Outdoor-Activities/Garden-for-Wildlife/Schoolyard-Habitats/Certify-Your-Schoolyard.aspx
Use cell phones to record field observations. Everyone has the opportunity to become science photographers and contribute data to the website about the habitat. http://www.projectwild.org/workshops.htm
Cell PhoneMovie Making opportunities abound. Most kids get excited about being in a movie and having it posted to YouTube. http://kidsvid.4teachers.org/index.shtml Preparing to Filmhttp://www.atomiclearning.com/moviemaker2 Movie Making Tutorials PChttp://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/imovie/tutoriallist.html iMovie Tutorials
Use amazing cell phone Google Earth apps for mapping and sharing habitats. You can even monitor trees with Google Earth 3D trees. http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html
Improve motivation, post student creations to class Wiki. The opportunity for feedback and recognition to the students is unlimited given our link to the global community, kids are excited about interacting about a common interest with people in foreign countries. http://www.epals.com/ Global Community Building
Project Based Learning Example #3 Teen Health Commercials Build Stronger Bodies and Minds.http://www.hhs.gov/grants/ Health and Human Services Grants
Relevant Education: Teens are rapidly developing their bodies and minds so they must be given opportunities to learn more about health and how to avoid negative behaviors. http://www.hhs.gov/safety/index.html Health and Human Serviceshttp://teens.drugabuse.gov/mom/tg_intro.php Science of Drugshttp://depts.washington.edu/thmedia/ Teen Health and the Media
Authentic Audience: Global Teen Internet Community. This is the class Teen Health Wiki where commercials and other health related projects will be posted. http://depts.washington.edu/thmedia/ Teens and Media
Students can conduct online research and health surveys from cell phones to gather data about what teens are interested in. Use Parent-Teen Contracts to promote positive behavior. http://www.parentcontracts.com/index.html Parent Teen Contracts http://new.surveyshare.com/ Survey for Health
A great deal of reading, writing, editing, acting, and filming goes into creating the Teen Health Commercials. Because there is an authentic audience, students are motivated to do the research and create several script drafts until they think they have a quality commercial. Students collaborate to get the job done. Plan on three times as much time for filming because kids will want to shoot the commercials three or four times to “get it right”. I highly recommend you use several cameras and/or let them film using their cell phones. Introduce Safeware.com for cell phone insurance so you have backup when the phones drop and break. http://depts.washington.edu/nwmedia/ Teen Media Literacy
One out of three teens in the US is overweight or obese. It is in our national interest to improve the health of our young people to improve the quality of their lives and to reduce economic disaster from soaring medical costs. Technology could help us improve outcomes. Along with the Wii and the Xbox Kinect, which are designed to get kids off of the couch while gaming, cell phone apps are also designed to get people exercising and eating healthier foods. http://www.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikewomen/en_US/training_app Nike Fitness Apphttp://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/hoiNtus4JvIcPtP8LQPyud4Kyy393oepWii Fitness http://www.xbox.com/en-US/kinect Xbox Kinect Fitness
Use cell phones for healthy cooking ideas. Instant knowledge with unlimited variety, that is what kids expect from the Internet and their cell phones. Everything is just a touch of a button away and soon even the button will disappear. Look out everybody, cell phones of the future just might be able to read our minds! I know they can already “read your voice” to see if you are a happy or a disgruntled customer. http://www.apple.com/iphone/apps-for-iphone/#heroCooks Cooking Apps

Students and their families can learn to use cell phones for stress management and 24/7 online teen counseling by trained staff. Since school work is one of the top five teen stressors it is our obligation to provide students with the necessary information to help them manage their stress. Cell phones can provide the necessary conduit for communication that teens may need when experiencing high levels of stress. Free yoga apps are also promising resources. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/29/education/29stress.html Yoga HS http://www.phe.gov/emergency/communication/guides/media/Documents/14f.pdf Emergency Preparedness Kithttp://www.hhs.gov/children/index.html Health Education http://teenlineonline.org/teens/ Trained Teen Online Counseling

“How do I grade all these projects?” you might ask. You need an Online LMS Learning Management System. Some people us Moodle, others useEdmodo, I am experimenting with Schoology. All three have private, secure sites for classroom teachers. I will let you know next time how it works out. http://moodle.org/http://www.edmodo.com/https://www.schoology.com/home.php Learning Management Systems
Recommendations before you get started: 1. get yourself, staff, students, and parents certified in cybersafety –try iSafe or Common Sense Media 2. get yourself, staff, students, and parents certified in Digital Citizenship- learn the etiquette of the Internet 3. get your district to approve an updated Acceptable Use Policy that includes new technology 4. create and search for lessons that integrate cell phones into the curriculum, do not use them as a reward tool. Enjoy learning new technology along side your students. Thank you. http://www.commonsensemedia.org/digital-citizenship/6-8 Digital Citizenship http://www.isafe.org/channels/?ch=ed Cybersafety
