Step It Up!

  2. 2. <ul><li>A home walking program for adolescents with JIA </li></ul><ul><li>Recruiting 60 participants </li></ul><ul><li>Working with Jill Blitz, DPT </li></ul><ul><li>Received the Quality of Life Grant through the Arthritis Foundation </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><ul><li>To study the effects and impact of a pedometer based walking program in adolescents with JIA and lower extremity involvement. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To determine whether the addition of an educational program to a pedometer based family walking group increases exercise compliance and exercise tolerance </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Three phases, four visits </li></ul><ul><li>During each evaluation the following will be done with each participant: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>MD: (Joint exam & BMI) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>PT: (range of motion, strength, 6 minute walk test) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Surveys (CHAQ, Walk with Ease self-test, VAS) </li></ul></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>First Visit : consent and evaluation </li></ul><ul><li>Instructed to increase walking (6 weeks) </li></ul><ul><li>Second Visit : evaluation and pedometer instruction </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Half of participants will participate in modified Walk with Ease course through the Arthritis Foundation </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Walk with family and count steps (6 weeks) </li></ul><ul><li>Third Visit : evaluation and pedometers uploaded onto computer </li></ul><ul><li>Walk with family and count steps (8 week) </li></ul><ul><li>Fourth Visit : evaluation and satisfaction survey </li></ul>
