From Ken Larson– Senior Pastor, Faith Covenant Church of a healthy, growing church. Here at Faith Covenant we have found it helpful to ask how our church reflects these traits – which ones are strengths and which ones need more a en on. One of the markers focuses on ministries of compassion, mercy, and jus ce. To help us explore this more fully, on Friday a ernoon there will be a forum on “Race, Jus ce, Mercy and the Covenant” for all delegates and par cipants. This will be a mely discussion that will benefit all of us. The mee ngs will take place at our church’s loca on on Friday and Saturday. If there is anything we can do to assist you in making plans to a end, please let us know. We are excited to host this event, so we hope you will join us to celebrate what God has been doing and explore future ministry possibili es. Yours in Christ, Ken Larson; Senior Pastor– Faith Covenant Church Welcome! From Superintendent Garth McGrath Dear Friends in Christ, On behalf of Faith Covenant Church in Farmington Hills, Michigan, I am pleased to invite you to take part in the 2015 Great Lakes Conference Annual Mee ng. In 2014, our congrega on celebrated its centennial, and so hos ng the Conference Annual Celebra on is a great way for us to kick off our 2nd century of ministry. The Detroit area has seen so much growth in recent years. When I first came here in January of 1999, there were only two Covenant churches in a metro area of 4.5 million people. Now there are 16– so clearly God has been at work here! It’s been amazing to see new churches planted and exis ng congrega ons adopted into our fellowship. None of this could have happened without the leadership and assistance of our Great Lakes Conference churches and leaders. So come and see what we’ve been able to do together. The theme for this year’s gathering is “Building on the Missional Markers.” These ten “markers” are the indicators It is my privilege to invite the 82 churches of the Great Lakes Conference to send delegates to our 2015 Conference Annual Celebra on at Faith Covenant Church in Farmington Hills, Michigan, on April 24th and 25th. During our me together we will hear accounts of how God is at work in churches pursuing revitaliza on. We will hear good news about progress that has been made in our church plants. We will celebrate the impact that our “Leadership Connec ons” (TLCs) are having on congrega ons across our conference. We will consider our high calling to be “salt and light” in our complicated and broken world. And we will give thanks for the lives that are being touched and transformed by the power of the Gospel in and through the ministry of our Great Lakes Conference churches. In the midst of our celebra on we will consider a budget that will fund our ini a ves in church revitaliza on, church plan ng, leadership development, and outreach. We will elect wise, skilled, gi ed and spiritually mature women and men to serve on our Conference Board. We will highlight the importance of the “healthy missional markers” in the life of the local church. And we will connect with other lay leaders and pastors of churches in our sister churches – to encourage them, and be encouraged by them. I look forward to gree ng your delegates in person at Faith Covenant Church on April 24th and 25th to celebrate our partnership in God’s mission field known as the Great Lakes Conference. ...I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10

Race, Justice, Mercy, and the “Covenant” In the a ermath of incidents s rring racial tension and raising ques ons of jus ce in Ferguson, Missouri and New York City, ECC President Gary Walter urged Covenanters to (1) strive for deeper awareness of the pain that such incidents cause for many in our growing mul -ethnic family and to (2) strive for progress in our efforts at the local church level to seek God’s peace and jus ce across the fractures that too readily divide. The recent release of “Selma,” a film chronicling the horrific events of Bloody Sunday in 1965, a tragic incident in Cleveland OH, a forum on the subject of race and jus ce at the Midwinter Conference and recent conversa ons among pastors in the GLC indicate the need for both deeper awareness of the pain and prac cal tools for making progress. Those needs will be the focus of this year’s con nuing educa on experience for pastors and lay delegates at our GLC Annual Celebra on. Our Friday a ernoon gathering will be resourced by a panel of pastors/leaders for whom these challenges are very real. We urge all GLC pastors - and invite delegates and par cipants from all of our churches - to a end. W O R K S H O P (Friday at 2:00pm)
