  2. 2. Why discover keyword popularity? <ul><li>Determines what people are searching for </li></ul><ul><li>Can show trends for keywords over time </li></ul><ul><li>Can show regional/geographical trends </li></ul><ul><li>Allows you to discover keywords that may have commercial value </li></ul>

What are the best keyword tools? <ul><li>Google’s Keyword Tool – click here </li></ul><ul><li>Market Samurai – click here </li></ul><ul><li>Both are free </li></ul><ul><li>Google’s tool is basic, but quick; there’s very little analysis and filtering that can be done </li></ul><ul><li>Market Samurai has the features for proper keyword popularity analysis, but is slower </li></ul><ul><li>There are other paid tools (Keyword Elite, Micro Niche Finder, Keyword Blueprint, etc), but none offer the features of Market Samurai for free </li></ul>

The four important metrics <ul><li>Number of searches per month </li></ul><ul><li>Number of times the keyword/phrase appears in a title tag of other pages on the internet </li></ul><ul><li>Number of times the keyword/phrase appears in the body copy of other pages on the internet </li></ul><ul><li>The amount of competition there is for that keyword/phrase in Google Adwords </li></ul>

Number of searches per month <ul><li>Be sure to use phrase match as this eliminates searches that have your target words in the wrong order </li></ul><ul><li>Look at trends – basketball gets searched more when the NBA finals are on </li></ul><ul><li>Check that you are getting results from your target geographical locations and language </li></ul><ul><li>Eliminate searches with phrase-to-broad ratio of less than 30% </li></ul>
  6. 6. 2. Number of times the keyword appears in the title <ul><li>One of Google’s most important measures of importance is if the keyword/phrase appears in the meta title. Avoid keywords with huge title competition </li></ul><ul><li>More than 30,000 competitors will be difficult to rank for </li></ul>
  7. 7. 3. Number of times the keyword appears in body copy <ul><li>The number of competing pages where the keyword appears somewhere in that page is important </li></ul><ul><li>Anything over 100,000 will be hard to compete with </li></ul>

Amount of Adwords competition <ul><li>Keyword popularity in a commercial sense is measured by competition </li></ul><ul><li>Look at how much the keyword is worth – both tools give you this information, though it is often inaccurate </li></ul><ul><li>Look at the level of competition </li></ul><ul><li>As a further test, Market Samurai can return OCI (online commercial intent) </li></ul>

Putting keyword research into action <ul><li>Filter the keywords using the aforementioned parameters </li></ul><ul><li>Take several of the remaining keywords and create optimized pages for them </li></ul><ul><li>Link back to these pages using search engine optimization techniques (choose the techniques you are most comfortable with) </li></ul>
