Mobile Radiation

  1. 1. MOBILERADIATION By- Lily Fernandez
  2. 2. Mobiles• A device that can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link.• It does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network.
  3. 3. • Long and varied history•Reginald Fessendens invention•Shore-to-ship demonstration of Mobiletelephony•Through the Second World War with militaryuse and civil services.
  4. 4. Functioning• A transmitter takes the sound of your voice• Encodes it onto a continuous sine wave.• The encoded sound has been placed on the sinewave• The transmitter sends the signal to the antenna• Which then sends the signal out.
  5. 5. Switching center figures out and keeps track of, the callers number and the receivers number.cell tower
  6. 6. •The country had only 0.34 millionmobiles in 1997, which has nowgrown to 919.18 million by 2012.
  7. 7. Mobile Radiation• Cell phones emit signals via radio waves• comprised of Mobile frequency (RF) energy, aform of electromagnetic radiation.• Electromagnetic radiation is made up ofwaves of electric and magnetic energy movingat the speed of light.
  8. 8. • Most of the transmission signals are lost in space, as the signals are sent out 360 degrees from the cells antenna. Only a small percentage hit the tower.• Having a mobile tower within 50 mts is like being in a microwave oven for 24 hours
  9. 9. • Those living in a 50-300m radius face a highrisk-much worse than smoking as you cannotsee or smell radiation.•The WHO recently classified cell phoneradiation with gasoline engine exhaust, leadand DDT.
  10. 10. • Some companies do not take proper permissions before constructing the towers nor do they get the premises assessed for property tax.• A survey carried out in Mumbai showed that out of 3700 towers installed 1800 were illegal.
  11. 11. EffectsHuman Environment
  12. 12. Effects on Human Health•The case of a person using a cell phone, most of the heating effect will occur at thesurface of the head, causing its temperature to increase by a fraction of a degree.• The cornea of the eye when exposed to 2-3 hours can produce cataract as it does nothave this temperature regulation mechanism.
  13. 13. 1.Most common complaints:• Memory loss, mental confusion• Headaches induce extreme fatigue, sleep disorders.•Create joint pain, musclespasms, tremors Depression, discomfort, irritation, nausea, appetite loss.
  14. 14. •palpitations of the heart, visual disorders, cardiovascular problems, respiratoryproblems.•More severe reactionsinclude seizures, paralysis, psychosis andstroke. All these are related to changes inthe electrical activity of the brain
  15. 15. 2.Cancer• Cancer happens in extreme cases, with almost everyone living close to mobile towers.• The area of concern is base-stations and their antennas as it emits radiation continuously and is more powerful at close quarters.
  16. 16. Normal cell Cancer cell•Mobile phone use >10 years doubles risk of brain cancer.•Cell phone use also increases risk of glioma, acousticneuroma, salivary gland tumors , uveal melanoma, facialnerve tumors, skin, blood, testicular and breast cancer.
  17. 17. Incident: Jaipur•The Kasliwals and fifty other families•Seven people in the neighbourhood havebeen diagnosed with brain cancer•Cell phone towers installed -2003•First a dog died of cancer.•Mr Kasliwal says, “These towers were put upillegally and the Jaipur Municipal Corporation(JMC) has no records for granting any permissionfor installation of cell phone towers.”
  18. 18. 3. Risk on ChildrenChildren are more vulnerable as:• Skulls are smaller & thinner - ↑’s radiationabsorption•↑rate of Cell division - more susceptible togenetic damage• Myelin sheath not developed – brain waveactivity
  19. 19. •Bone marrow in a child’s skull absorbs 10 times moremicrowave radiation than does an adult.•Children and teenagers, before age of20 - five times more likely to get braincancer if they use cell phones.
  20. 20. Effect on Environment• Effect on farm animals- Dairy cows that were kept in proximity to cell phone tower for two years had a reduction in milk production along with increased health problems and behavioral abnormalities.• EMR from cell phone towers - diseases in plants & animals and is the reason for the vanishing butterflies, some insects and birds like sparrows.
  21. 21. • Vanishing Bees- A study showed that bees refused to return to their beehives.• The cause was the recent increase in atmospheric electromagnetic radiation.• The increased radiation given off by such devices interferes with bees’ ability to navigate.
  22. 22. Awareness Among People
  23. 23. Steps taken by the Government• A high-powered committee has suggestedto the state environment department on cellphone tower radiation hazards.•A provision has been made to not to installany mobile tower within 50m of schools, hospitals, and other major public places.• Random spot checking of radiation emissionhave been done at two places without anyprior intimation.
  24. 24. • According to the norms, the Radio Frequency exposure limits to be lowered to 1/10th of the existing level.• Mandatory to display specific absorption level on the mobile handset by the manufacturer.• Violation of radiation limits or non- certification will entail a fine of Rs.5 lakh per tower.
  25. 25. Solutions•Plant green trees near the window facing thetower as green plants absorbradiation.•There are gadgets called ‘enviro-strips’ that can be placed aroundthe tower to reduce radiation.•There are radiation shields are curtains andavailable for home use.
  26. 26. Radiation is strongest when the signal is very weak. In weaksignal areas, the cell phone cranks up its power to connectto the base station.
  27. 27. Tilting the phone away from your ear as you speak will helpreduce radiation zapping your head when the cell istransmitting to the tower.
  28. 28. • Always hold the phone 2 inches from your ear and you will dramatically reduce the amount of radiation penetrating into your head.• Keep the phone at least a foot away from your body and use the speakerphone setting.
  29. 29. • Use a headset. A wired headset may still transmit radiation through the wire – but it is at a reduced level.• Best, is to purchase a ferrite bead, which is a clip you put on the wire of a headset. The bead absorbs the radiation and none reaches your head.
  30. 30. • Use a Bluetooth earpiece, which still emits radiation, but some models reduce the radiation by 100 times.• Due to the constant low radiation of the blue tooth near the ear and therefore really close to your brain, one should take it out of the ear when not in use.
  31. 31. • Buy a low radiation phone. OR• Don’t Talk or Text!!!!!
  32. 32. So… Wish You a HappyCommunication!!
