Narration <ul><li>story </li></ul><ul><li>a series of connected events, true or fictitious, that is written or told with the intention of entertaining or informing. </li></ul><ul><li>narrative </li></ul><ul><li>a more formal word, referring to the kind of prose that recounts (i.e. retells) happenings. </li></ul><ul><li>( Webster’s New World Dictionary and Thesaurus ) </li></ul>

I filled the sink with hot water and soap and threw in all the teeth. I scrubbed them clean, rinsed and dried them all- and then realized that I had no idea whose teeth was whose. </li></ul><ul><li> (Record of Events) </li></ul>

  19. 19. Narrative (of personal experience) <ul><li>Actually, he didn’t quite get on the train, because the automatic doors closed on him as he was getting on. I knew from experience that this isn’t really a problem-you just push with your arms and the doors bounce back. However, this couple appeared to be unfamiliar with the Underground and this man did the worst thing possible- he stepped back but somehow leaned forward. This meant that the doors closed on his neck so his head was inside the train but the rest of his body was outside… He had a most peculiar expression on his face and he was waving his hands up and down. His wife, who had found a seat, didn’t seem to be in the least disturbed… </li></ul><ul><li>(Complicating Action) </li></ul>

Evaluation <ul><li>Denotes the narrator’s subjective attitude towards the story being told. </li></ul><ul><li>It may appear at any point in the story </li></ul><ul><li>(between comp. action and resolut.) </li></ul><ul><li>e. g. “I felt terrified”; “I enjoyed the experience”; “He acted cleverly”; “She gave me the worst job”; The atmosphere was ominous” </li></ul><ul><li>Positive or Negative: they invite readers to share their emotional states or responses. </li></ul>

To remember… <ul><li>Evaluative clauses in many cases include the verb “to be” (relational process), its synonyms or the verb “to have” </li></ul><ul><li>These verbs are used (to categorize experience into classes) </li></ul><ul><li>e.g. He was a surgeon </li></ul><ul><li>She is a brave girl (to attribute qualities) </li></ul><ul><li>Lily was on the corner (to indicate location) </li></ul><ul><li>Bubba had a gun (to indicate possession) </li></ul><ul><li>The nun was shocked (to show feelings/attitudes) </li></ul>

To remember… <ul><li>Material processes (verbs) involve “doing words”; these are frequent in some stories because they are action-oriented ; because what the narrator does is more important than what she feels or thinks. </li></ul><ul><li>Recounts have more material processes and generally few mental processes. </li></ul>
