Family Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in 1840 in Votkinsk, a small town inpresent-day Udmurtia. His father, Ilya Petrovich Tchaikovsky, was anengineer who served as a lieutenant colonel. Hismother, Alexandra AndreyevnadAssier, was a granddaughter of the French sculptor.Tchaikovsky had four brothers and two sisters.
Education and marriageTchaikovsky graduated from the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in SaintPetersburg and the attended Saint Petersburg Conservatory. In July 1877, Tchaikovsky married his former student,Antonina Miliukova. Almost as soon as the wedding ended, Tchaikovsky realised he had made a mistake. The couplelived together for only two and a half months before the emotional crisis forced him to leave. He and Antonina remained legally married but never lived together again nor had any children.
Composer and conductor Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer whose works included symphonies, concertos, operas and ballets.He also worked as Professor of Music Theory at the Moscow Conservatory. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, which he upheld with appearances as a guest conductor laterin his career in Europe and the United States.
Death and Legacy On 6 November 1893 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky died in SaintPetersburg, at the age of 53. The official cause of death was reported to be cholera, most probably contracted through drinking contaminated waterseveral days earlier. He is buried at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Tchaikovsky was a musical genius. He is well known all around the world. Some of his works are among the most popular theatrical music in the classical repertoire.
