3. This is the headline of the contents page. It differentiates from
normal expectations of a contents page straight away from how
the headline is shaped. This shape compliments the main image
as it allows the headline to stay to one corner of the magazine
which creates organisation and makes the page look neater.
Also as it is so different it attracts the audience into reading the
contents page as it is a known theory that a lot of people skip
reading the contents page when opening a magazine. The
colour white keep the black, grey & white colour scheme shown
through the background which is a gradient going from dark to
light down the page. To the left of the headline is the letter V
which has a transparent inside but a grey outline. This links it to
the magazine as the ‘V’ stands for the word ‘Vibe’ which is the
name of the magazine. The transparent inside makes sure the
‘V’ doesn’t clash with the headline as the headline overlaps the
V slightly. This is effective as it reminds the reader of the
magazine making the magazine name stick in there head a bit
more.
4. This is the contents information showing what articles and features
can be read in the magazine. It is a column to the right of the page
which adds to the organisation of the page. The text is aligned to the
left also for neatness. The sub-title ‘features’ is larger than all the
other text in this column making it clear that it is the sub-title. It is also
a different text from the other text in this column to differentiate it from
the rest and make it clear that this is a sub-title. This is the same for
‘fashion’. The page number is in bold above the page description and
is followed by a small title for the article that is on that page number.
Being in bold makes it stand out and makes it easier for the eyes to
read. The sub-sub-titles (‘BARELY THERE etc.) are a different colour
to the rest of the text which keeps the colour scheme and also makes
it easier on the human eyes as there is a clear contrast with dark
colours which makes it easier to read. An effective feature of this
contents page which differentiate from the usual is the fact that the
famous artist names (such as ‘Ciara’ and ‘Robin Thicke’ are in bold.
page they would want to read straight awaythe audience to be to read all of out what
This allows instead of having able to pick the features which saves
time and in the long run is a way to create repeat purchase as this is a feature that some consumers
would really like which means they would prefer this compared to other magazines. Underneath the
information is a byline crediting the writer and photographers. This is just for information purposes
and is a different text to make it clear that this is different from the description of the page.
5. The main image is a professional photo of R&B star
Ciara. She is wearing a grey leotard which blends in well
with the grey background which fades from black which
keeps the pages colour scheme making it easy on the
eyes and effective. She is positioned just underneath the
features column with her legs to the left of the column
and her feet slightly overlapping the header. This is
effective as usually a magazine uses a photo of a
character standing up, but this character is lying down
and is positioned around all the text on the page which
would immediately grab the audiences attention as it is
so different. The character is makes a sexy facial
expression and pose which would attract the male
audience and also the female audience that are inspired
by such artists. This carries out the ideology of the
majority of hip hop/R&B female artists having to be sexy.
The character is obviously airbrushed to make her look
more appealing to the public and get rid of all possible
The left side of her body is also darker than the right side which goes with the colour scheme of the
blemishes.
magazine using a black to white gradient which is an effective technique to make the main image
(and only image in this case) blend well with the background. It creates neatness and makes it more
attractive.
