Welcome Back

 1. 1. The New Mr. Miles New Procedures, Loftier Goals, Innovative Learning
 2. 2. New Procedures

All tests can be retaken for a higher grade and you will receive the highest grade

All work turned in (late or on time) will now receive full credit

Homework will not be graded but still given regularly throughout the year

Learning, from now on, becomes your responsibility

It is now impossible for you to fail my class…if you commit yourself to learning and my class

 3. 3. But…

In order to retake tests, all homework and class work leading up to the test must be completed and turned in.

I will take all late work, but you will serve silent lunch before you can turn it in.

If you owe me work from before track out, please see me after class. We will discuss a plan to get it turned into me.

 4. 4. What does this mean for you?

You should not fail my class, but it is still possible if you do not give any effort

If you are missing work, your grade will be left blank on SPAN…SO NO ZEROES!

If you do not turn in any work and I have to submit grades, your INCOMPLETE will then become a 0.

This means you have 9 weeks to get all work turned into me so that you do not fail Social Studies.

Your final grade will only consist of summative assessments that can determine what you know about the subject I am teaching (i.e. projects, quizzes, tests, etc.) NOT HOMEWORK

 5. 5. Why?

Homework is a process and should only help you to perform better on summative assessments

Homework should still be completed when assigned because it will help you perform well on tests, and all homework must be completed if you want to retake a test later in the unit.

Some of my ideas (not all) are supported by a district-wide grading initiative

I want to teach you everything you should know about Africa, Asia, and Australia, but I also want to teach you how to learn for yourself

 6. 6. New Procedures

IF I HAVE ALREADY COLLECTED HOMEWORK OR ANY OTHER WORK, PUT YOUR WORK IN THE TRAY THAT CORRESPONDS TO YOUR CLASS.

I WILL NOT ASK YOU FOR MAKE UP WORK. IT IS UP TO YOU TO MAKE SURE YOU TURN YOUR WORK INTO ME.

IF YOU WANT TO TURN IN LATE WORK, YOU MUST SERVE SILENT LUNCH TO TURN IT IN OR YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT.

 7. 7. New Procedures

WHEN YOU TURN IN LATE WORK, I MUST INITIAL AND DATE THE TOP OF THE ASSIGNMENT TO PROVE YOU SERVED SILENT LUNCH.

NO DATE OR INITIALS…NO GRADE!

NO EXTRA CREDIT

IF YOU WANT TO RETAKE A TEST, YOU MUST DO SO DURING SILENT LUNCH.

A TABLE OF CONTENTS WILL BE KEPT AND CHECKED AFTER EACH UNIT--MUST BE COMPLETED TO RETAKE TESTS

 8. 8. Why?

~Your final grade should only reflect what you know (level of mastery)

~I will teach you what you need to know and how to learn, but it is up to you to take ownership of your own learning and your final grade

~Not everyone can successfully perform at the same rate and level

~Because I was working way too hard before track out and some of you were not working hard enough

~You, as my students, need the responsibility in your own learning

 9. 9.

Welcome back and good luck!
