  12. 12. DesignThese tips will make your résumé easier to read and/or scan into an employers data base Use 8-1/2- x 11-inch white or off-white résumé paper If you must mail your résumé, put it in a large envelope matching the paper Print only on one side 12
  13. 13. Design Use a font size of 10 to 14 points Use non-decorative fonts Choose one font and stick to it Avoid italics, script, and underlined words Do not use horizontal or vertical lines, graphics, or shading Do not fold or staple your résumé 13
  14. 14. Reminders BE CONSISTENT!  Keep dates, titles, and locations in the same place for each entry  Use the same font, spacing, bolding, etc.  If you lead off with your title, do so throughout  You want to make it easy for the employer to read 14
  15. 15. Reminders BE CONCISE!  Two pages maximum, but one is even better  If you do use more than one page, include your name and "page 2"  Present only the highlights-its a marketing piece, NOT an autobiography 15
  16. 16. Reminders Never include false information Avoid the excessive use of numbers: do not use 1/01/07-3/15/07 Use: Winter quarter 2007 or January- March 2007. But remember, be consistent! Proofread carefully. . ..then proofread again 16
  17. 17. Reminders Allow sufficient margins, at least one inch on all sides Balance material on the page so that it is eye pleasing Put most important information about 1/3 from the top (dont hide it at the bottom) Use no more than two font styles on your résumé 17
