2. Film noir and the hard boiled detective
The hard boiled detective films started in the 1940s which brought a new
kind of dark and edgy feel compared to the previous detective films before
that where about sherlock holmes and philo vance. The new film noir hero
did not stay the same however they each offered a common theme of
crime and detection in the dark urban scene.

3. Is Nicolas Winding Refn's an auteur?
Nicolas winding Refn believes filmmaking should be an organic process. He avoids
storyboards and insists on shooting his films in chronological order. This allows the
filmmaking process to become the means of discovering the film itself His films are
always rooted in the traditions of the gritty and violent genre cinema he grew up on
but he refused to obey genre conventions. His fims also always involve and anti
hero who is extremely violent.

movies ?
● John woo has massively redefined the action genre with his films such as
The killer that brought a herioc bloodshed era into the action genre. Many of
his trademarks are still being interpreted today such as the use of dual
handguns and the face to face stand off. He also redefined the costume of the
action hero with the use of trench coats and carrying matchsticks in there
mouth.
