Welcome!
Hello fellow 6010 students, my name is Joanna Sturgeon and I’m excited to be starting my graduate school journey with you all! I look forward to working with you and getting to know you better.
About Me…

I live in a beautiful historic village called Vicksburg.
Vicksburg is about 20 miles southwest of Kalamazoo.
I live with my husband, a spunky cat and an even spunkier eleven year old daughter entering middle school this year.

Educational and Professional
Background
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Western Michigan University in 2005 with a B.A. in English/Creative Writing and a History minor. During the early years of my education I worked at the Vicksburg District Library as a technical advisor. I created and maintained the library’s first website, I researched and made recommendations for a new automation system and I trained staff in emerging technology. After graduating from WMU I worked at an eBay store and later started my own, still existing eBay shop under the name comicchixs. My husband now runs the store and sells on Amazon.com as well. The siren call of the library lured me back in 2009, and I now work at the Vicksburg District Library again in several capacities. I hold a Limited Professional Library Certification from the Library of Michigan and Department of Education. I am an MLA member.
Working at the library
I supervise and perform a variety of tasks at the Vicksburg District Library including:

Head of Inter-Library Loan Services
Processing materials ordering

And more! I’m always very busy, with a full work table.
Goals and Expectations
Having worked in a library for years, I feel I have a pretty good grasp of the profession. However, there is always more to learn and I look forward to learning more about aspects of the profession I am not so familiar with. I also look forward to learning about different library environments, since I have only worked in a “rural” village library.
I plan to specialize in the more technical aspects of the profession. I love technology’s possibilities and believe it is a huge part of our profession’s future. Once I obtain my MLIS I hope to move into a more technologically demanding position. As a long term goal, I would love to be in a position in a large library or other institution on the cutting edge of technological advancements.
My Skills
I feel I have a lot to offer any group, I am very enthusiastic and excited about the work, and I have experience in the field. In particular my skills include:

Fairly high technological aptitude
Excellent writing skills

I prefer teammates who also value excellence in their work, are enthusiastic and easy to communicate with. It may be difficult, but a great learning experience, to work with people whose standards of work are a bit less rigid.
More Info.
Thanks everyone for viewing my slide show introduction. Before you leave, I’d like to tell you a bit more about me. I like to:

Go for jogs / runs (if it’s a really good day )
Read great sci-fi, post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction, among others
