Media Studies Analysis

 1. 1. Media Studies Analysis Aamir Shah
 2. 2. Introduction

My project was to make a music magazine or design a film , I chose to do a film because I thought it would be more practical and enjoyable as well as give me a chance to improve my teamwork skills. I worked with Emma Jopson and Alix Sampford students in my media studies class we all had individual roles my role was to find was to do the audience research find copyright free music check as well as checking grammatical errors . I also played a role in the film as the newsreporter this is shown on the television at the start of the film. I also helped with the editing to decide which parts were suitable for the film and which were inconvenient.

 3. 3. In what ways does my media studies project used , develop , challenge forms and conventions of real media products

My media studies film is a horror genre it does follow the linear narrative ,however the film was created for the purpose to engage the audiences interest to continue watching the film. In terms of innovation we left enigmas in the film the serial killer was not shown there was a blackout as soon as the murder occurred and a scream that gently faded away. We also displayed the girl doing a lot of walking to build up suspense we edited a lot of the walking so that the people watching the film would not lose interest. I think our choices worked perfectly we asked several members of the public questions regarding our film and we got a positive response . A lot of people stated that our film the typical criteria of a horror film and it also used the typical conventions normally found in a horror film.

 4. 4. Quotes from the film

“ What you doing out so late”

“ I'm going to a party”

“ Well just be careful all right”

Aaarrrrggggghhhhhh

Stills from the film
 5. 5. How does my media product represent particular social groups?

I think that our film would be appealing to young teenagers as the blood gruesome scenes appeals highly to them. I do not think it would appeal to females as they generally turn away when they see blood and people getting murdered it terrifies them. The film does adhere to stereotypes commonly seen in the media , a headline in the news would normally be something like something like a dangerous criminal on the loose has murdered a number of people this week so our film does relate to the stereotypes that are generally seen in the media. I think the costumes used in the film are appropriate as it displays a young girl wearing casual clothes getting ready to go for a night out and the serial killer is shown wearing a hoodie this is the clothing associated with a thug or a serial killer. There are plenty of different styles of shots used in our film but the common shot we have used is the stalker shot and during the conversation shot reverse shots are constantly being used. In terms of lighting the beginning scene contained bright lights when the girl is getting ready for the party and it worked very well because the news was being shown and she was being obnoxious so immediately an enigma is set up is anything going to happen to her , the outside where the murder took place is normally a crime scene that is linked with media so many times in the news are related someone has been murdered on the street or in an alley.

 6. 6. What kind of media institution might distribute my media product and why?

I think that our film would be appealing to MTV films because they generally support teenage films such as (Dance Flick a typical teenage dance film where they show-off there dance moves). This is perfect for our film because this is our target audience . They would back it up for a real because the films they support generally have a meaning to them the purpose of their films is to send a message directly to the audience. I also think they would support our film because they target non mainstream films that have low budget . An example of this would be jackass the movie they own the rights because they made the show.

 7. 7. Who would be the audience for my media product?

The target audience for our show would be young adults because they thrive and enjoy from witnessing no holds barred and gruesome scenes they also enjoy enigmas that create suspense on a side note I would like to say that the audience would mainly be young adults. I think our secondary target audience would be college or high school students they also thrive from the gruesome atmosphere. They enjoy this because it leaves to the edge of their seat they do not know what is going to happen next . I know this because I have asked a few people of the public. They specifically enjoy enigmas.

On a different note I think our film would appeal highly to the lower working class rather than the higher class because they would enjoy heroic and patriotic films because they believe those type of films set good example and have good morals. I know this because this from personal experience because I have spoken to a higher class person.

 8. 8. What have I learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In our project we used a variety of technologies to help us research our product. To record our project work we used blogger at first we made drafts then when we were finally happy with our product we published them on the website. The problems we had with blogger is that it would not let us log in a lot of the times and we could not upload the work we had to write directly on the page. We used YouTube as a source to view opening sequences and one of our main tasks was to watch and review an opening sequence relating to our genre this was because we would have a clear idea of what to do and what conventions to use in our film when we designed it . We also used pen drives to transfer clips once we changed the format to them . They were lower quality because we had to compress them and post the opening sequence as evidence to support the worker on blogger .I –movie played a huge part in our film it was used to edit the clips in our film , place the entire movie together as well as testing out the correct music . A video camera was used to record our film we had to make sure that it was charged so that we fulfil our operation. The problems we had is that it overwrote so many of our clips so we had to film them again. We used simple questionnaires with tick boxes and a few response questions so that it would be less time consuming and we would achieve our aim and that would be to get a positive feedback. We also interviewed fellow members of our media group to give us comments and feedback in regards to our film , we did not receive any negative feedback fortunately. This was done by recorded audio.

 9. 9. Looking back from the preliminary task what do I feel I have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

We made major improvements from our pre-liminary task when we filmed that there was a lot of bad lighting and the audio was not very clear however our shots used in the pre-liminary task were perfect and they made the story very dramatic. Our story was very simple and the main purpose was to twist the story in order to create entertainment and humour. We did not use any titles or font because we wanted to make a better outcome and leave out the less important things till the end.

I think that our project met the typical conventions of a horror film and we had the typical storyline that would normally be used in a horror film. One of the main strengths we displayed a close up of the news and the viewers would clearly read the headline and this worked well with our film because it shows the girl should be scared but was obnoxious.

We were a lot more confident when we made the final film however when we filmed the preliminary task we were really nervous as a group because we were worried with the final outcome .

It was easier for us to find the suitable music in the preliminary task , but on the other hand it was more difficult for us to find the correct music in the final product as we thought the music was not dramatic enough so we tested different samples until we found the correct one.

 10. 10. Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

More Competitive Team Work

More Clear Ideas

Divided Roles equally

Finished in time

Weaknesses

Technical problems with blogger

Alot of time taken in editing

Alot of time taken to find the correct music
