1. 1. New approaches to school cooperation in the new enlarged Europe: examples of the best methods at “Liceo Scientifico N. Tron” ENE PROJECT: Educating about the New Europe-Portfolio of the European Student E-TANDEM PROJECT: how to learn and improve a language through the use of ICT and distance learning
    2. 2. EDUCATING ABOUT THE NEW EUROPE: PORTFOLIO OF THE EUROPEAN STUDENT

Schools taking part in this project will acquire basic knowledge on The New Europe

This means the student achieves specific competencies that may allow him mobility in a complex-structured mosaic of people and cultures

The student acquires awareness of his own local and regional identity and shares his culture with those of other countries

    3. 3. LEARNING PATHS PROPOSED BY THE PROJECT

Implemention of activities to be carried out cooperativly.

Progressive development of the recognition of common European cultural dimensions in order to discover links between local identities and the implementation of institutions in the European Union.

Allow students to improve their abilities and competence within ICT

    4. 4. STUDENTS’ PERSONAL E-PORTFOLIO

As a result students create a personal e-portfolio which includes:

A Personal Profile

Iconographic paths describing places of their territory in which traces of a common membership to a European Culture are discovered.

The products carried out through a Webquest

Competency test results proving the extent of the acquired knowledge.

A Logbook of the experiences carried out including the students’ approach to European culture

A final list of the knowledge and proficiencies acquired

    5. 5. PROJECT: E-TANDEM EUROPE LIVE

The Council of Europe focuses its actions on promoting linguistic and cultural diversity as part of its policy concerning the building of a European identity. Foreign language teaching is seen as comprising not only linguistic performance and verbal communication, but also such abilities as intercultural consciousness and intercultural skills.

    6. 6. How can students learn a language better in an authentic linguistic context: integrating the E-Tandem project into the traditional lesson

Tandem language learning has long since been promoted by universities and adult education programs

The origin of this project lies in its users (teenagers) and their learning environment (the traditional and the virtual classroom)

E-Tandem is a project that requires a strict arrangement by the teachers as well as by the students; it’s a particular method in that its purpose is to implement language learning that enhances students’ intrinsic motivation

    7. 7. What are the teachers’ roles and the students’ roles in the project?

The teacher is not only a mediator between two cultures, or an expert of the target language, but moreover a moderator, a coach and a technical adviser

The student plays the lead role in the project: he is the person most responsible for his learning process

The student acquires the ability to manage his learning process by himself as part of a life long learning objective.

The student learns to use ICT in a didactic context, acquiring ICC (Intercultultural Communicative Competence)

    8. 8. How does the project work practically?

we need a partner school and a partner classroom in which our mother tongue is taught by a teacher who has some proficiency in ICT and is not afraid of questioning his own didactic methodology

Teachers compare their programs and make decisions regarding subjects, time tables and Tandem rules

Students use e-mail, telephone, video conference, online plattform, and chat forums to fulfill their tasks. They have to use both languages: their mother tongue and their target language in the written tasks and a code-switching approach in the oral tasks

    9. 9. How can students implement and enrich their linguistic and intercultural resources

Texts in the foreign language have to be corrected by native speakers

Mutual errors and mistakes have to be communicated and explained accurately

Teachers will discuss mistakes in the classroom giving the required explanations

Linguistic and cultural differences are to be underlined both by learners and teachers in order to make the students counscious of their European citizenship

    10. 10. Why should a school decide to introduce this project in its formative work plan?

Thanks to the gradual intruduction of new media, innovative teaching methods and motivating learning patterns, the inclusion of Etandem in the foreign language lesson can ensure an added didactic value to the learning process

    11. 11. In what way can this project be improved?

One of the most fascinating challenges in the construction of the European Union is that of seeing cultural identity as a binding force that is open to other cultures.

We must, then, work towards co-operation and mutual recognition in the co-existence of different systems

    12. 12.

One of the educational objectives is that all Europeans should know at least two foreign languages. This knowledge is necessary for the preservation of linguistic and cultural diversity throughout Europe.

Thanks to distance learning and virtual learning environments this challenge is achievable. ETandem methodology offers the chance of using the target language in dealing with different contents according to TIE-CLIL approach system

In what way can this project be improved?
    13. 13.

The TIE-CLIL approach consists of teaching and learning in a foreign language. For example: teaching and learning chemistry or biology in German and in Italian through the Etandem method means to create an authentic virtual learning environment in which the same subject is taught respectively by an experienced professional German and Italian teacher. In this way learners use the language to learn a specific and not only linguistic content.

In what way can this project be improved?
