  1. 1. It all started when John Sutterpicked up a piece of metal that lookedlike gold. He took it to be tested and itwas confirmed real gold. By the late1848 word spread and the discovery inCalifornia became National news.
  2. 2. Gold was discovered in California on January 24, 1848.
  3. 3. Gold was first discovered byJames Wilson Marshall whilehe was building a sawmill forSutter on his property.
  4. 4. After gold was found inCalifornia, 300,000 people came tosearch; 150,000 of those peoplecame by sea.
  5. 5. They came mostly fromAmerica but also some fromEurope, Australia, Asia, andLatin America.
  6. 6. Three routes 49’ers came from were:• Around Cape Horn (6-8 months)•The Isthmus of Panama (2-3 months)•Overland route (3-5 months)
  7. 7. Early gold seekers are called forty-niners because they came toCalifornia in 1849. They all came toSutter’s Mill in Coloma, C.A.
  8. 8. Sutter’s Mill was built by John Sutter. He was aSwiss emigrant who came to California. He alsomade Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento. He couldn’tcontrol all the people who came seeking for gold;they overran his property leaving as mess.
  9. 9. They first panned for gold gettingthe gold from streams or rivers.The tools they used were pans thatthey put in rivers to get gold.
  10. 10. After a while 49’ers startedmining for gold. Mining for gold used picks and shovels. Miners dug for gold in caves.
