  • Madhusudan, I know I'm a year out of date but there is also another facet to this worth mentioning. As you rightly point out, in the sciences there is always a willingness to change the science when new evidence springs to light. It has to be peer verified evidence but still the willingness to change. However, in all of the faith based arguments there can never be a crack or an opening in their arguments. One only has to look at the persecutions that the scientists of the day took when declaring that the earth went around the sun. But as more and more evidence piled up even the Catholic Church had to eventually bow down and change it's mind.

What tires me more than anything is this old argument. 'So whether you choose to believe in Creation or evolution, it takes faith.' - No it doesn't and it never has. The evidence of evolution is real, it exists and is pretty overwhelming. The evidence of Creationism is none existent because they actually have no worthy 'evidence' at all. And what little creationists talk about is manufactured in the same way that a conspiracy theory is. The back to front approach. Here is my conclusion, what is the minimum I need to make it so and lets forget any facts that prove it wrong.

  • Alot of very interesting facts. Some are a bit depressing, but good to know. Overall, a great slide deck.

  • Really like these slides that show how the majority of people and scientists agree with evolution, like this makes it more true and believeable .

  • Ahh... how predictable that the first comment on this should come from a creationist! And with the same old argument that scientists take evolution on faith! Not so at all, I'm afraid. There is plenty of empirical evidence for evolution, and the theory is accepted because of overwhelming mountains of evidence - not taken on faith at all. What you regard as a weakness of science is indeed its strength: it is precisely because we are willing to be 'shaken' by new evidence that we are confident about the reality of evolution. Indeed, the very method of science (and this is the opposite of faith) is to go looking for exactly the kinds of evidence that will shake our theories. And when our best efforts to shake such a theory fail, we have to, however grudgingly, accept the validity of the theory. Not quake in our boots that our faith was misplaced. Indeed, the 150 years since Darwin published 'On the Origin of Species' can best be characterized as a continuous effort by thousands of scientists to disprove his theory or at least poke holes in it. And the reason we hold Darwin in such high esteem is because we haven't really been able to shake the basic tenets of his theory, even as we have added many novel facets to it that would have fascinated him as well.

I'm sorry that you share a common misunderstanding about how science works. It is easy to go looking for confirmation of what you already believe (based on faith). The real intellectual challenge lies in confronting the opposite, seeking things that might destroy what you believe, and accepting the reality of them anyway. That is where science really excels among all human enterprises.
