  • In our surveys, some said that they were doing AMT because they’d been laid off or they couldn’t get more hours from their workplace in this economy.
  • It’s typically thought that Turk provides supplementary income. Supplementary doesn’t mean luxury. You know who else says they only provide supplementary income? Walmart

    The Walmartization of Information Labor

    - doesn’t provide “primary income”
    Thing to watch out for:
    - AMT stands to benefit from systematic unemployment in depressionland
  • No way to rate requesters
    Employees can get voted down
    Work gets stolen - high paying HITs, lots of time, no pay off
    Rejections without justification - the scale of AMT prevents responsivity
    Frustrations about contributing to spam
    Lots of people complained of unfairly rejected HITS

  • Amazon Marketplace, EBay has this. Why doesn’t AMT have this? The reading we offered at the beginning was hardly dystopian -- it was pretty accurate.

  • is that enough? not inherently a bad thing (though mousetraps are meant to kill things, so maybe a better metaphor?) Technologies might solve one set of problems but create a whole set of other problems. And just because it is being used by people a certain way right now doesn’t mean it will always be used that way. The medium alone is NOT the message -- but it can sure look like it is if you look at one snapshot in time. So building the perfect system right doesn’t absolve us of future responsibility.
