3. 3. The Skeletal System

There are 206 Bones in the Body

Vital organs are protected by the skeletal system.

Bones are composed of tissue that may take one of two forms; Compact or dense bone, and spongy or cancellous bone.

Build your own Skeleton

The bones of the body fall into four general categories: long bones, short bones, flat bones, and irregular bones. Long bones are the humerus, tibia, femur, ulna, and Short bones are found in the wrists and ankles. Flat bones include ribs, cranial bones, and bones of the shoulder. Irregular bones are all others that do not fall into the previous categories.

Exit

 5. 5. The Digestive System

When you eat, your body digests the food so your cells can use it to make energy.

Acids and enzymes eat away at the surface of food to break it down.

The small intestine is where food is broken down into molecules tiny enough for the body cells to use.

In the villi are tiny tubes that carry blood called VESSELS. Food molecules are taken

into these blood vessels. Once the food is in the blood, it can travel all over the body.

Exit

 7. 7. The Nervous System

The central nervous system contains the brain and spinal cord

A neuron (nerve cell) is the basic unit of structure and function of the nervous system

The nervous system is made up of your brain, your spinal cord, and an enormous network of nerves that thread throughout your body, it's the control center for your entire body.

When a neuron is stimulated -- by heat, cold, touch, sound vibrations or some other message -- it begins to actually generate a tiny electrical pulse. This electricity and chemical change travels the full length of the neuron. But when it gets to the end of finger-like points at the end of the neuron, it needs help getting across to the next extended finger. That's where chemicals come in. The electrical pulse in the cells triggers the release of chemicals that carry the pulse to the next cell. And so on and so on and so on.

Exit

 11. 11. Important Facts About the Cardiovascular System

Your Heart is about the size of your clenched fist, and it is a muscle. It contracts and relaxes 70 or so times a minute at rest. It squeezes and pumps blood through its chambers to all parts of the body.

Your blood travels through a rubbery pipeline with many branches, both big and small. The tubes that more gently drain back to the heart are veins.

The body of an adult contains over 60,000 miles of blood vessels!

An adult's heart pumps nearly 4000 gallons of blood each day!

Your heart beats some 30 million times a year!

The average three-year-old has two pints of blood in their body; the average adult at least five times more!

A "heartbeat" is really the sound of the valves in the heart closing as they push blood through its chambers.

Exit
 12. 12. The Muscular System

You have over 30 facial muscles which create looks like surprise, happiness, sadness, and frowning.

Eye muscles are the busiest muscles in the body. Scientists estimate they may move more than 100,000 times a day!

The largest muscle in the body is the gluteus maximus muscle in the buttocks.

On average, probably 40% of your body weight is in muscles. You have over 630 muscles that move you. Muscles can't push. They pull.

The cells that make up muscles contract and then relax back to original size. Tiny microscopic fibers in these cells compress by sliding in past each other like a sliding glass door being opened and then shut again. The cells of your muscles use chemical energy from the food you eat to do this.

CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE MUSCULE QUIZ TO FIND WHERE

IMPORTANT MUSCLES ARE LOCATED

Exit
