Prayer It Makes a Difference <ul><li>As the old man walked the beach at dawn, he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. </li></ul><ul><li>Catching up with the youth, he asked him why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun. </li></ul><ul><li>But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish. How can your effort make any difference? </li></ul><ul><li>The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and threw it to the safety of the waves. It makes a difference to this one, he said. </li></ul><ul><li>An anonymous poet </li></ul>

Religious Education <ul><li>Opportunities for students in 2011: </li></ul><ul><li>Year 5 Parish Mass – Wednesday 29 th February (week 5) </li></ul><ul><li>Soul Mass – Sunday 18 th March (week 7) </li></ul><ul><li>Planet Green – environmental project which is lead by Mr Behan and Mrs Brady </li></ul><ul><li>Earth Hour Liturgy – Saturday 31 st March </li></ul><ul><li>Altar Server Training </li></ul><ul><li>Class liturgies and whole school masses </li></ul>

Literacy <ul><li>Sound Waves Program – focus on letter sound and the various letters that make that sound </li></ul><ul><li>Spelling lists – Children will be studying a range of words that have the focus sound in them. </li></ul><ul><li>Proofreading and editing are a major focus </li></ul><ul><li>Bookwork - cursive handwriting </li></ul><ul><li>Literacy Groups – reading and writing </li></ul>
  5. 5. Numeracy <ul><li>Maths Groups – based on individual testing across addition and subtraction, fractions and decimals and multiplication and division </li></ul><ul><li>Number strand is the major focus </li></ul><ul><li>Children should know all times tables fluently </li></ul>

Technology <ul><li>Integration of ICLT across all KLA’s to support learning, motivation, engagement and authentic learning </li></ul><ul><li>Use of the internet, interactive whiteboard, cameras, microphones, webcams and video cameras </li></ul><ul><li>Class blogs – access instructions to come home </li></ul><ul><li>Cyber safety lessons </li></ul>

Homework <ul><li>Homework in Year 5 consists of at least 2 hours of reading per week, nightly spelling activities (Sound Waves textbook), maths (Signpost Maths, online activities etc) and a class task </li></ul><ul><li>Allocate time each night </li></ul><ul><li>It’s given out on a Thursday and returned on the following Wednesday. If it is not possible to complete homework please send a note with your child otherwise we will send a note home. </li></ul><ul><li>Expectations about homework are the same as expectations about class work. All homework is to be well presented. </li></ul><ul><li>Diaries need to be signed each week by a parent to show that you have seen their reading record. Diaries are a great way to communicate between teacher and parent. </li></ul><ul><li>In Year 5 we encourage students to take responsibility for their work habits, possessions and actions. </li></ul>
