What is CARNAVAL? <ul><li>Save the date: </li></ul><ul><li>November 5, 2010 </li></ul><ul><li>Chicago Cultural Center </li></ul><ul><li>CARNAVAL is the annual fundraiser that supports the work of the Latino Policy Forum, the only organization in the Chicago area that facilitates the involvement of Latinos at all levels of public decision-making. </li></ul><ul><li>But having such an important mission doesn’t mean we can’t have a fun… </li></ul>

Latinos are Illinois’ economic engine. <ul><li>Latinos have represented 90% of the state’s population growth over the past decade. </li></ul><ul><li>Latinos are the state’s largest ethnic minority. </li></ul><ul><li>Latinos bought half of the homes in the state between 2000 and 2008. </li></ul><ul><li>Latinos represent 1-in-4 children under age 5 & 3-in-4 entrants to Chicago’s labor market. </li></ul><ul><li>More than 90% of Latino children are U.S.-born citizens. </li></ul>

But state investment has not kept pace. <ul><li>Less than half of Latino-led nonprofit organizations received a grant from the state in FY08. </li></ul><ul><li>Latino youth lack access to quality, culturally-relevant preschool programs in predominately Latino neighborhoods. </li></ul><ul><li>The mortgage foreclosure crisis has hit Latinos communities especially hard, with foreclosures up nearly 150% in Latino city wards since 2007. </li></ul><ul><li>Latino workers represent 4% of the state employees, despite being nearly 15% of the state labor force. </li></ul>

What we’re doing to shape our future. <ul><li>The Forum conducts analysis to </li></ul><ul><li>inform, influence and lead. </li></ul><ul><li>Its goals are to </li></ul><ul><li>improve education outcomes, </li></ul><ul><li>advocate for affordable housing, </li></ul><ul><li>promote just immigration policies, </li></ul><ul><li>and engage diverse sectors of the community, </li></ul><ul><li>with an understanding that </li></ul><ul><li>advancing Latinos </li></ul><ul><li>advances a shared future . </li></ul>
  7. 7. At CARNAVAL, we celebrate successes. <ul><li>In 2010, the Latino Policy Forum </li></ul><ul><li>ushered critical legislation through Springfield to allocate $45 million for early childcare facilities. </li></ul>
  8. 8. At CARNAVAL, we celebrate successes. <ul><li>In 2010, the Latino Policy Forum </li></ul><ul><li>provided a local voice on Federal immigration reform, engaging hundreds of Chicago-area advocates. </li></ul>
  9. 9. At CARNAVAL, we celebrate successes. <ul><li>In 2010, the Latino Policy Forum </li></ul><ul><li>analyzed data to reveal groundbreaking, alarming discrepancies in State grants to Latino-led organizations and State-level employment opportunities </li></ul><ul><li>for Latinos. </li></ul>
  10. 10. At CARNAVAL, we celebrate successes. <ul><li>In 2010, the Latino Policy Forum </li></ul><ul><li>increased the presence of Latino voices in mainstream media and Latino participation in State-level decision-making. </li></ul>
  11. 11. At CARNAVAL, we celebrate successes. <ul><li>In 2010, the Latino Policy Forum </li></ul><ul><li>authored the official comments on bilingual pre-K rule change, bringing vital bilingual education to our youngest learners. </li></ul>

At CARNAVAL, we celebrate successes. <ul><li>In 2010, the Latino Policy Forum </li></ul><ul><li>launched the Illinois Latino Agenda, a strategic alliance of 46 local Latino-serving organizations that has met with numerous elected officials, </li></ul><ul><li>including Gov. Quinn. </li></ul>
  13. 13. At CARNAVAL, we celebrate successes. <ul><li>In 2010, the Latino Policy Forum </li></ul><ul><li>did these things with just eight full-time staffers </li></ul><ul><li>… and a lot of passion. </li></ul>
