the seed and the soils

  1. 1. THE SEED AND THE SOILS
  2. 2. (Luke 8:5-15) "A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. {6} "Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. {7} "And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. {8} "But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold." When He had said these things He cried, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!“ >>>
  3. 3. {9} Then His disciples asked Him, saying, "What does this parable mean?" {10} And He said, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that 'Seeing they may not see, And hearing they may not understand.' {11} "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.{12} "Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. >>>
  4. 4. {13} "But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. {14} "Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. {15} "But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
  5. 5. INTRODUCTION When the Sower went out to sow, he sowed the Word of God according to verse 11. The Word of God is sown when a person hears the Word of God preached. The Word of God is sown when a person listens to the Word of God read. The Word of God is sown when a person reads the Word of God for himself.
  6. 6. INTRODUCTION When the Word of God is sown it falls into one of four types of soil. Wayside soil Rocky soil Thorny soil Good soil The soil would be symbolic for the heart.
  7. 7. INTRODUCTION The Four Types of Heart Where the Word falls: Wayside soil = The stubborn Heart Rocky soil = The Shallow Heart Thorny soil = The Strangled Heart Good soil = The submissive Heart
  8. 8. THE STUBBORN HEART - Vs. 12 "Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
  9. 9. THE STUBBORN HEART - Vs. 12 Satan takes the word out of their heart There is no time for the Word There is no true interest in the Word (2 Cor 4:3-4) But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, {4} whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
  10. 10. THE SHALLOW HEART - Vs. 13 "But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.
  11. 11. THE SHALLOW HEART - Vs. 13 There is an instant, joyous response to the preaching of or reading of God's Word. However, it is surface level response. They don't develop roots The minute something arises in the way of temptation, they fall away - (1 Th 3:5) For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain.
  12. 12. THE STRANGLED HEART - Vs. 14 "Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity.
  13. 13. THE STRANGLED HEART - Vs. 14 The seed starts to grow but is strangled by… Cares of this life - (2 Tim 2:4) No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.
  14. 14. THE STRANGLED HEART - Vs. 14  The seed starts to grow but is strangled by… Riches of this life - (Mark 10:23-25) Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!" {24} And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! {25} "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
  15. 15. THE STRANGLED HEART - Vs. 14  The seed starts to grow but is strangled by… Pleasures of this life - (2 Tim 3:1-5) But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: {2} For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, {3} unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, {4} traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, {5} having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
  16. 16. THE STRANGLED HEART - Vs. 14 The seed starts to grow but is strangled by the Cares, Riches And pleasures of this life As a result it does not bring fruit to maturity - (John 15:8) "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
  17. 17. THE SUBMISSIVE HEART - Vs. 15 "But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
  18. 18. THE SUBMISSIVE HEART - Vs. 15 The submissive heart is noble and good - (Acts 17:11) These were more (noble) fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
  19. 19. THE SUBMISSIVE HEART - Vs. 15 The submissive heart is more than a hearer of the Word. He is a doer also. He keeps it and bears fruit - (James 1:22-25) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. {23} For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; {24} for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. {25} But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
  20. 20. CONCLUSION Where does the word fall in your life? What kind of heart does it hit? Stubborn, Shallow, Strangled Submissive.
