1. 1. Respiratory System
PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
Olanrewaju Efuntade
Medical Terminology
2. 2. ANTIBIOTICS.....CIPRO (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride)
Cipro is a synthetic second generation fluoroquinolonebroad spectrum antimicrobial agents administered orally.
It is a faintly yellowish to light yellow crystalline substance with a molecular weight of 385.8.
Its empirical formula is C17H18FN3O3•HCl•H2O
It kills bacteria by interfering with the enzymes that cause DNA to rewind after being copied, which stops DNA and protein synthesis.
3. 3. CIPRO(Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride)
CIPRO is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms that can cause Lower Respiratory Tract Infections. Example: Escherichia coli, Klebsiellapneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilusinfluenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae
Cipro is also used in the treatment of chronic bronchitis, caused by Moraxella catarrhalis .
in clinical trials, ciprofloxacin is not a drug of first choice in the treatment of advanced pneumonia.
Ciprois the drug of choice in treatment of Anthrax a deadly form of respiratory infection.
The sale of ciprofloxacin increased dramatically following the anthrax scare of 2001.
The United State Government made a deal with Bayer, the manufacture of Cipro in allowing the making of generic form of Cipro so that it will be affordable.
The serious adverse effects that may occur as a result of ciprofloxacin therapy include irreversible peripheral neuropathy, spontaneous tendon rupture and tendonitis, acute liver failure, toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome with severe central nervous system disorders as well as phototoxicity reactions.
4. 4. BRONCHIODILATOR…..SEREVENT (Salmeterol)
Serevent also generically know as Salmeterol is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist drug that is currently prescribed for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Inhaled salmeterol works like other beta 2-agonists, causing bronchodilation by relaxing the smooth muscle in the airway so as to treat the exacerbation of asthma.
When used as prescribed, inhaled salmeterol decreases the number and severity of asthma attacks. However, like all long acting beta-adrenoceptor agonist , it is not for use for relieving an asthma attack that has already started
Serevent is available in an aerosol inhaler and as SereventDiskus inhalation powder. Both forms of Serevent can be used with or without inhaled or oral steroid therapy.
5. 5. SEREVENT(Salmeterol)
Serevent is not for the treatment of seriously worsening asthma, and should not be started if the asthma attack is deteriorating.
Serevent is intended only for long-term prevention of symptoms, and should not be used more than twice a day.
Doctors will prescribe a short-acting bronchodilator to relieve acute asthma attacks therefore, users of serevent should o not attempt to relieve worsening asthma by increasing the dosage of Serevent.
Salmeterol may increase the risk of asthma-related death
Side effects include : chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats, tremors, shaking, or restless feeling.
Skin rash: bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness.
Wheezing: choking, or other breathing problems after using this medication; or
worsening asthma symptoms.
Less serious Serevent side effects may include: headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, or insomnia, sweating, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea or, dry mouth or throat irritation.
6. 6. MUCOLYTIC…..MUCOMYST(N-acetylcysteine )
Mucomyst also generically known as Acetylcysteine, is a medicine that destroys or dissolves mucus. It is usually given by inhalation but may be given in other ways in a hospital.
Acetylcysteine is used for certain lung conditions when increased amounts of mucus make breathing difficult. Acetylcysteine liquefies (thins) or dissolves mucus so that it may be coughed up. Sometimes the mucus may have to be removed by suction.
Acetylcysteine can also be used to treat other respiratory diseases such emphysema, bronchitis, tuberculosis, amyloidosis bronchiectasis, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is also used post-operatively, as a diagnostic aid, and in tracheotomy care
Acetylcysteine is a white crystalline powder which melts in the range of 104° to 110°C and has a very slight odor.
7. 7. MUCOMYST(N-acetylcysteine )
Acetylcysteine , is indicated as an antidote to prevent or lessen hepatic injury which may occur following the ingestion of a potentially hepatotoxic quantity of acetaminophen.
For treatment of excessive airway mucus accumulation, acetylcysteine is administered as a nebulization. It is aerosolized and inhaled at a concentration of 50 ml/hour for 30 to 60 minutes, twice a day.
While generally safe and effective Acetylcysteine can cause spasms of the lower airways, this drug should be used with caution in people history of lung disease
There are no contraindications for the use of Acetylcysteine as an antidote for acetaminophen toxicity.
.Acetylcysteine has a very bad taste and foul sulfur odor. Nausea and vomiting are also potential side effects. The bad taste of the drug can also cause drooling.
