Divisions of the Human Nervous System

  1. 1. DIVISIONS of the HUMAN NERVOUS SYSTEM
  2. 2. Divisions of the Human Nervous System Autonomic Nervous System Cerebro-Spinal System  Sympathetic System  Parasympathetic System  Central Nervous System  Peripheral Nervous System
  3. 3. Autonomic or Sympathetic Nervous System  acts as a control system functioning largely below the level of consciousness, and controls visceral functions.  many of its activities are “autonomous” or “self-regulating”
  4. 4. 2 Divisions / Systems of Autonomic NS Sympathetic System  consists of nerves and ganglia  acts as a unit; is active in emotion  stimulates the body only for using energy  involved in the “fight or flight” response during emergency situation or in high emotion Parasympathetic System  composed of fibers from the cranial region  sometimes called “rest and digest” system as it quiets the body and returns it to a lower intensity of arousal. It is involved in relaxation. It conserves energy and controls sedentary
  5. 5. Cerebro-Spinal System  The portion of the nervous system comprising the brain, cranial nerves, spinal cord and the spinal nerves concerned with transmission of impulses from sense organs to the voluntary muscles The brain and spinal cord is protected by three meninges Dura mater Arachnoid Pia mater
  6. 6. Central Nervous System The central nervous system (CNS) is the processing center for the nervous system.
  7. 7. The Brain -It weighs 3 pounds and contains 90% of the body neurons -is a highly specialized organ

  17. 17. Spinal Cord The spinal cord is the main pathway for information connecting the brain and peripheral nervous system.
