The Living Primates,[object Object],Common Primate Traits,[object Object],Classification of Primates,[object Object],The Various Primates,[object Object],Explanations of Variable Primate Adaptations,[object Object],Distinctive Human Traits,[object Object]
I. Common Primate Traits,[object Object],All primates belong to class Mammalia and they share all the common features of mammals. ,[object Object],Primates share a number of traits with other mammals:,[object Object],Fur (body hair),[object Object],Give birth to live young- mammary gland,[object Object],Warm-blooded, the ability to maintain a constant body temperature,[object Object],Behavior is learned rather than instinctive,[object Object]
I. Common Primate Traits,[object Object],Physical Features,[object Object], 1. Skeletal features of primates reflect an arboreal (tree living existence) existence.,[object Object], 2. The forelimbs are specially flexible, built to withstand both pushing and pulling forces.,[object Object], 3. Clavicle or collarbone,[object Object], 4. Generally omnivorous, they eat all kinds of food, including insects and small animals, as well as fruits, seeds, leaves and roots.,[object Object], 5. Prehensile hands and opposable thumbs,[object Object]
I. Common Primate Traits,[object Object],6. Vision is very important to primate life. Brain devoted to vision rather than to smell. ,[object Object], 7. Stereoscopic or depth vision- eyes are directed forward,[object Object], 8. Large brain relative to body size.,[object Object],D. Social Features- study of Harry Harlow,[object Object], 1. Social relationships begin with the mother and adult during the fairly long dependency period of primates.,[object Object], 2. Play is important for learning. It provides practice for the physical skills necessary or useful in adulthood.,[object Object]
Figure 4-1 Some Common Primate Traits,[object Object]
Figure 4-2 A Comparison of the Dependency Periods of Primate Offspring,[object Object]
II. Classification of Primates (Taxonomy),[object Object]
The most primitive primates,[object Object],Retention of some claws,[object Object],Reliance on olfaction,[object Object],Shorter gestation and maturation,[object Object],Dental specialization called the "dental comb”,[object Object],Elongated snouts,[object Object],Strepsirhine rhinarium (wet nose),[object Object],Prosimians(Lemurs, Lorises, Tarsiers),[object Object]
Lemurs,[object Object],Lemurs are found on the island of Madagascar and other islands off the coast of Africa. They became extinct elsewhere in the world.,[object Object],Characteristics:,[object Object],Larger lemurs are diurnal and eat vegetable foods: fruit, leaves, buds, and bark.,[object Object],Smaller lemurs are nocturnal and insectivorous (insect -feeding).,[object Object]
Lorises,[object Object],Loris are found in tropical forests and woodlands of India, Sri Lanka, southeast Asia, and Africa.,[object Object],Characteristics:,[object Object],Lorises use a climbing form of quadrupedalism.,[object Object],Some lorises are insectivorous; others supplement their diet with fruit, leaves, gums, and slugs.,[object Object],Females frequently form associations for foraging or in sharing the same sleeping nest.,[object Object]
Tarsiers,[object Object],Tarsiers are small nocturnal ,[object Object],	primates found on the islands ,[object Object],	of southeast Asia.,[object Object],Characteristics:,[object Object],Tarsiers eat insects and small vertebrates which they catch by leaping from branches.,[object Object],The basic social pattern appears to be a family unit consisting of a mated pair and their offspring.,[object Object]
Anthropoids(Monkeys, Apes and Humans),[object Object],Common traits:,[object Object],Larger brain and body size,[object Object],Reduced reliance on the sense of smell,[object Object],Greater degree of color vision,[object Object],Bony plate at the back of the eye socket,[object Object],Longer gestation and maturation period,[object Object],Only has nails,[object Object]
Monkeys,[object Object],Monkeys represent about 70% of all primates,[object Object],Monkeys are divided into two large groups separated by geographic area as well as several million years of evolutionary history:,[object Object], New world monkeys (Platyrrhines),[object Object], Old world monkeys (Catarrhines),[object Object]
New World Monkeys,[object Object],Almost exclusively arboreal and found in southern Mexico and central and south America.,[object Object],Two families:,[object Object],Callitrichidae give birth to twins, have claws, live in families composed of a mated pair or a female and two adult males, plus the offspring. Males are involved with infant care.,[object Object],Some of the cebidae family possess prehensile tails and most live in groups of both sexes and all ages, or as monogamous pairs with subadults,[object Object]
Old World Monkeys,[object Object],Habitats range from tropical forests to semiarid desert to snow-covered areas in Japan and China.,[object Object],Characteristics:,[object Object],Most old world monkeys are quadrupedal and arboreal; others have adapted to life on the ground.,[object Object],All old world monkeys belong to one family, the Cercopithecidae, which is divided into subfamilies,,[object Object], the cercopithecines (terrestrial and ,[object Object],	omnivorous) and the colobines (arboreal ,[object Object],	and vegetarian).,[object Object]
Hominoids (Apes and Humans),[object Object],Characteristics that distinguish hominoids from monkeys:,[object Object],Larger body size ,[object Object],Absence of a tail,[object Object],Shortened trunk,[object Object],Long arms relative to legs (except humans),[object Object],More complex behavior,[object Object],More complex brain and enhanced cognitive abilities,[object Object],Increased period of infant development and dependency,[object Object]
Gibbons and Siamangs,[object Object],Found in tropical southeast Asia.,[object Object],Locomotor adaptations for brachiation may be related to feeding behavior while hanging from branches.,[object Object],Diet is largely fruit with supplements of leaves, flowers, and insects.,[object Object],Basic social unit is a monogamous pair and their dependent	offspring. ,[object Object],Males and females are territorial and delineate their territories with whoops and “songs”.,[object Object]
Orangutans (Pongid ),[object Object],Found in heavily forested areas of Borneo and Sumatra.,[object Object],Slow, cautious climbers and almost completely arboreal.	,[object Object],Large animals (males = 200 pounds, females = 100 pounds) with pronounced ,[object Object],	sexual dimorphism. ,[object Object],Solitary,[object Object],Principally frugivorous (feed-eating).,[object Object]
Gorillas (Gorilla),[object Object],The largest of the living primates confined to forested regions of central Africa.,[object Object],Exhibit marked sexual dimorphism; Males can weigh up to 400 pounds, females 200 pounds.,[object Object],Primarily terrestrial, employing a semi-quadrupedal posture called knuckle -walking.,[object Object],Live in groups that consist of one large silverback male, a few adult females, and their subadult offspring.,[object Object]
Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes ),[object Object],Found in equatorial Africa.,[object Object],Anatomically similar to gorillas particularly in limb proportions and upper-body shape.,[object Object],Locomotion includes knuckle-walking on the ground and brachiation in the trees.,[object Object],Eat a variety of plant and animal foods. ,[object Object],Large communities of as many as 50 individuals.,[object Object]
Bonobos (Pan paniscus) ,[object Object],Only found in an area south of the Zaire river.,[object Object],Their population is believed to only number a few thousand individuals.,[object Object],Exploit many of the same foods as chimps, including occasional small mammals.,[object Object],Male-female bonds constitute the societal core. Bonobo sexuality includes frequent copulations and occur throughout the female's estrous cycle.,[object Object]
Humans (Homo sapiens),[object Object],The only living species in the family Hominids,[object Object],Characteristics:,[object Object],Primate heritage is evident in anatomy, genetic makeup and aspects of behavior.,[object Object],Human teeth are typical primate teeth.,[object Object],Dependence on vision for orientation to the world,[object Object],Flexible limbs and grasping hands,[object Object],Omnivorous diet,[object Object],Cognitive abilities are the result of dramatic increases in brain size.,[object Object],Bipedal,[object Object]
III. The Various Primates,[object Object],Primates retain many primitive mammalian traits and cannot be defined by one or two traits alone.,[object Object],Primates are defined by evolutionary trends that characterize the entire order to one degree or another. ,[object Object],Traits we will focus on:,[object Object],Limbs and Locomotion,[object Object],Diet and Teeth,[object Object],Senses and the Brain,[object Object],Maturation and Learning Behaviors,[object Object]
1. Limbs & Locomotion,[object Object],Primates have a tendency towards erect posture.,[object Object],Hands and feet possess a high degree of prehensility or grasping ability.,[object Object],Features of the hands and feet include: ,[object Object],5 digits on hand and feet,[object Object],Opposable thumb/great toe,[object Object],Tactile pads enriched with sensory nerve fibers at the ends,[object Object],Fingernails,[object Object]
2. Diet and Teeth,[object Object],Primates lack dietary specialization and tend to eat a wide variety of foods. ,[object Object],Some primates kill and eat small mammals.,[object Object],Some primates are dietary specialists on leaves.,[object Object],Most eat a combination of fruits, leaves, and insects.,[object Object],Primates are generally omnivorous and this is reflected in their generalized dentition.,[object Object],Most primates have four types of teeth:,[object Object],	incisors, canines, premolars and molars.,[object Object],Dental formulae vary,[object Object],2123, 2132, 2133, 3143, more,[object Object]
3. Senses and the Brain,[object Object],Color vision in all diurnal primates. Nocturnal primates lack color vision.,[object Object],Depth perception or stereoscopic vision is made possible by eyes positioned forward on the front of the face and by an incomplete cross at the optic chiasma.,[object Object],Decreased olfaction.,[object Object],Increased complexity.,[object Object]
 4. Maturation, Learning, & Behavior,[object Object],Reduced numbers of offspring ,[object Object],Delayed maturation.,[object Object],Extension of the entire life span.,[object Object],Dependence on flexible, learned behavior.,[object Object],Tendency to live in social groups. ,[object Object],Males are permanent members of many primate social groups.,[object Object],Regular shows of affection, play, and emotion.,[object Object]
IV. Specific Primate Traits,[object Object],Habitats,[object Object],Most living nonhuman primates live in the tropical or semitropical areas of the new and old worlds.,[object Object],Most primates are arboreal, living in forest or woodland habitats.,[object Object],Some old world monkeys have adapted to life on the ground and gorillas and chimpanzees spend considerable time on the ground.,[object Object],No nonhuman primate is adapted to a fully terrestrial environment; all spend some time in the trees.,[object Object]
IV A. Habitats,[object Object]
IV B. Locomotion,[object Object],Suspensory w/ prehensile tail,[object Object],Brachiating,[object Object],Arboreal Quadrapedalism,[object Object],Vertical Clinging & Leaping,[object Object],Habitual Bipedalism,[object Object],Slow Quadramanous Climbing,[object Object],Knuckle Walking,[object Object],Terrestrial Quadrapedalism ,[object Object]
IV. Explanations of Variable Primate Adaptations,[object Object],Body Size,[object Object],All the nocturnal primates are small; and among the primates active during the day, the arboreal ones tend to be smaller than the terrestrial ones.,[object Object],2. Relative Brain Size,[object Object],Larger primates usually have larger brains, but larger animals of all types generally have larger brains. (fruit-eating larger than leaf-eating),[object Object],Group Size,[object Object], Nocturnal activity is an important predictor not only of small body size but also of small group size.,[object Object]
V. Distinct Human Traits,[object Object],1. Physical Traits,[object Object], Only humans consistently walk erect on two feet.,[object Object], Human brain is large and complex, particularly the cerebral cortex, the center of speech and other higher mental abilities.,[object Object], Human sexuality,[object Object],2. Behavioral Abilities,[object Object], Human behavior is learned and culturally patterned.,[object Object]
V. Distinct Human Traits,[object Object],3. Tool making,[object Object], Humans are the only habitual tool making animal.,[object Object],4. Language,[object Object], Only humans have spoken , symbolic language.,[object Object],5. Other Human Traits,[object Object], Humans hunt very large animal,[object Object], Completely terrestrial,[object Object], Longest dependency period,[object Object], Division of labor by gender,[object Object]
