  2. 2. A R Rahman Introduction <ul><li>Allah Rakha Rahman was born on January 6, 1967 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India as A. S. Dileep Kumar. </li></ul><ul><li>His genres are Film score, Theatre, World Music . </li></ul><ul><li>He is designated as Composer, record producer, music director, singer, instrumentalist, arranger, programmer . </li></ul><ul><li>He is active since 1985 , and is succeeding with a great speed . </li></ul><ul><li>Time Magazine has referred to him as the &quot;Mozart of Madras&quot; and several Tamil commentators have coined him the nickname Isai Puyal which in English means Music Storm . </li></ul>
  3. 3. A R Rahman - Early life & Influences <ul><li>A. R. Rahman was born in a musically affluent Tamil family. His father R. K. Shekhar, was a Chennai based composer and conductor for Malayalam films. Rahman lost his father at a very young age , so they gave their musical instruments on rent as a source of income. He was raised by his muslim mother Kareema (Kashturi). During these formative years, Rahman served as a keyboard player and an arranger in bands such as &quot;Roots&quot;, with childhood friend and percussionist Sivamani, John Anthony, Suresh Peters, JoJo and Raja. Rahman is the founder of the Chennai-based rock group, &quot;Nemesis Avenue&quot; </li></ul>
  4. 4. A R Rahman - Early life & Influences <ul><li>He played the keyboard and piano, the synthesizer, the harmonium and the guitar. His curiosity in the synthesizer, in particular increased because, he says, it was the “ideal combination of music and technology&quot;. </li></ul><ul><li>He began early training in music under Master Dhanraj. At the age of 11,he joined, as a keyboardist, the troupe of Ilaiyaraaja. </li></ul><ul><li>Rahman later played in the orchestra of M. S. Viswanathan and Ramesh Naidu, accompanied Zakir Hussain, Kunnakud Vaidyanathan and L. Shankar on world tours and obtained a scholarship to the Trinity College of Music where he graduated with a degree in Western classical music . </li></ul>

A R Rahman Film Scoring & Soundtracks <ul><li>One of the most imp. success in his whole career are the golden globe & the two academy awards for the soundtracks of the film , slumdog millionare . </li></ul><ul><li>In film roja , Rahman won National Film Award for Best Music Direction , Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Direction , Filmfare Best Music Director Award (Tamil) , Listed in TIME's &quot;10 Best Soundtracks&quot; of all time in 2005 . </li></ul><ul><li>In Film Slumdog , Raman won Academy Award for Best Original Music Score , Academy Award for Best Original Song for &quot;Jai Ho&quot;, BAFTA Award for Best Film Music , Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score </li></ul>
  6. 6. Shankar Ehsaan Loy <ul><li>Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (S-E-L) is an acclaimed Indian musical trio consisting of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa. They came together to provide music for several Indian Films such as Mission Kashmir (2000), Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Bunty Aur Babli (2005) , Taare Zameen Par (2007) and most recently for Rock on!! (2008). </li></ul><ul><li>All the members combine their taste, the Carnatic and Hindustani vocal tradition (Shankar), Western Rock (Ehsaan) and a deep understanding of fusion between music and technology (the Electronic Synthesizer) (Loy). </li></ul>

Shankar Ehsaan Loy The Winnings <ul><li>The trio won several awards :- </li></ul><ul><li>Filmfare awards ( Bunty Aur Babli, Kal Ho Naa Ho ) </li></ul><ul><li>RD Burman Award ( Dil Chahta Hai ) and </li></ul><ul><li>Star screen awards ( Mission Kashmir, Bunty Aur Babli, Dil Chahta Hai ) </li></ul><ul><li>In 2004, they bagged the National award for the film Kal Ho Naa Ho. </li></ul><ul><li>Besides these, the song Aaj ki raat from Don - The Chase Begins Again was reused by AR Rahman in his Oscar winning soundtrack Slumdog Millionaire . </li></ul>

Shankar Mahadevan <ul><li>Shankar Mahadevan is an Indian singer a music composer and an accomplished musician in Tamil cinema . </li></ul><ul><li>He is a part of the Shankar Ehsaan Loy trio team that provides music to Bollywood films. </li></ul><ul><li>From left to right: Zakir Hussain, U. Shankar Mahadevan Early Life <ul><li>Shankar Mahadevan was born in Chennai, India to a Tamil family, and grew up in Mumbai. </li></ul><ul><li>He learned Indian Classical Music and Carnatic music in his childhood and started playing Veena at the age of five. </li></ul><ul><li>He played Veena in the first song of Bhimsen Joshi and Lata Mangeshkar togeather composed by Shrinivas Khale .He went to OLPS High School in Chembur. </li></ul><ul><li>He graduated in 1988 with a degree in Electronics Engineering from R.A.I.T, under the Mumbai University . </li></ul><ul><li>As of now he sings songs in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada,Telugu, Marathi, and Carnatic. </li></ul>

  11. 11. Ehsaan Noorani <ul><li>Ehsaan noorani , the famous musician & Guitarist was born on October 12, 1963 . Ehsaan Noorani is the member of the shankar Ehsaan loy trio . </li></ul><ul><li>He was the bass guitarist for many music directors before he started composing music. Ehsaan has also studied music with Mr. Bismarck Rodrigues, an experienced guitar teacher from Mumbai (Bombay) . </li></ul><ul><li>He is active since 1986 with an age of 45 . </li></ul>

Loy Mendonsa <ul><li>Loy Mendonsa is part of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio which consist of himself, Shankar Mahadevan and Ehsaan Noorani. </li></ul><ul><li>Before becoming a music composer, he was a keyboard musician for famous music composers such as A. R. Rahman and Nadeem-Shravan. </li></ul><ul><li>His winnings ar the same as ehsaan noorani . </li></ul>

Anu Malik <ul><li>Anwar Malik, better known as Anu Malik is a music director in the bollywood . </li></ul><ul><li>The son of composer Sardar Malik, Anu Malik learnt music from Pandit Ram Prasad Sharma . He made his debut in 1981 with Poonam. He composed for various films like Sohni Mahiwal and Ganga Jamuna Saraswathi, but he did not get the required attention, or recognition. One of the only producers that always returned to him were FC Mehra's Eagle Films. </li></ul><ul><li>Anu Malik arrived in 1993 with Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee, Jaanam, Sir, and Baazigar. </li></ul><ul><li>The next year, he won the FilmFare Award for Baazigar . </li></ul>

Anu Malik Recognition & Style Of Music <ul><li>He got his real recognition when his work was used in films such as Aks, Fiza, Filhal and Mujhe Kuch Kehena hai (among others). </li></ul><ul><li>One great reason for his success is that he can give music to every film without being repetitive </li></ul><ul><li>His choice of musicians is also very nice , e.g. other musicians choose such as Nadeem Shravan, who tend to prefer mainstream singers like Kumar Sanu and popular lyricist Sameer in all their films . </li></ul><ul><li>But, Anu malik gives chance to all the singers & lyricist . He used singers like Sonu Nigam (with the song Ke Ghar Kab Aaoge from Border) to provide a great variety . </li></ul>

Anu Malik - Other Deeds <ul><li>He did a great work after his collaborations with some great directors such as alisha chinai , Sonu Nigam , JP Dutta , etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Anu Malik has remained one of the judges on the TV show , Indian Idol, throughout each season( I,II,III,IV). </li></ul><ul><li>Anu Malik also does playback singing for his compositions. Although he is not a mainstream singer, he has a unique style. </li></ul><ul><li>He is sometimes accused of Plagiarism (use other’s writings , thoughts , etc as one’s own )& he paid the required credits on the album cover to the original composer. </li></ul>

Anu Malik The winnings <ul><li>Anu Malik has won The National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the film Refugee in 2001. </li></ul><ul><li>He won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award twice for Main Hoon Na (2004) and Baazigar (1993). </li></ul><ul><li>He also got Special Jury Award (Filmfare) in 2000 for his outstanding contribution in music . </li></ul>

Bapi Lahiri <ul><li>Bappi Lahiri or Alokesh Lahiri was born on 27 November 1952 in calcutta , West bengal in a family rich with classical music </li></ul><ul><li>He pioneered the use of disco music in Indian cinema, and also sang some of his own compositions. </li></ul><ul><li>He was popular in the 1980s with films like Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal and Sharaabi among others. </li></ul><ul><li>He is very fond of jewellery and is usually found wearing gold ornaments and black glasses. </li></ul>

Bapi Lahiri Early Life <ul><li>Bapi Lahiri’s father, Aparesh Lahiri was a famous Bengali singer and his mother, Bashabi Lahiri was a musician and a singer who was well known in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. He was their only child. </li></ul><ul><li>Bapi lahiri’s ambitions were as high as sky ! He wanted to be famous ,not only nationally , but also internationally . He started playing tabla at a very small age ( Three years) . </li></ul><ul><li>He was firstly taught by his parents, and then he got a chance in a Bengali film ,daadu in 1972 at the age of 19 . </li></ul>
  20. 20. Bapi Lahiri Bollywood and Style of Music <ul><li>He came to Bollywood at the young age of 19. The first film for which he composed music was Nanha Shikari (1973). </li></ul><ul><li>The turning point of his career was Tahir Husain's Hindi film, Zakhmee (1975), for which he composed music and doubled as a playback singer . </li></ul><ul><li>He also scored music for many Hindi films produced from South India. </li></ul><ul><li>Bappi Lahiri pioneered the use of disco music in Indian cinema with an Indian flavour. </li></ul><ul><li>Most of his songs would be rendered by the two greats of Bollywood, Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. </li></ul>

Vishal shekhar <ul><li>Vishal-Shekhar are a music directing duo (Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani) for Bollywood films. </li></ul><ul><li>They have had a number of successes including Jhankaar Beats, Om Shanti Om, Tara Rum Pum, Salaam Namaste, Dus, Bluffmaster, Tashan, Bachna Ae Haseeno and Dostana. </li></ul><ul><li>They came into demand when they composed the score for the film , Jahnkar Beats. </li></ul><ul><li>Their efforts paid off when they won the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent for Jhankaar Beats. </li></ul>

Vishal & Shekhar <ul><li>Vishal Dadlani is also the vocalist of Mumbai-based electronic band Pentagram, and was a sometime-VJ at Channel V. </li></ul><ul><li>Shekhar is married and has a daughter named Bipasha. Vishal is still very much a part of the Indian rock band Pentagram. Shekhar is a trained classical singer and has a sound base of Indian music. </li></ul><ul><li>Their music is thus a combination of Indian classical with western rock influence brought by Vishal. </li></ul><ul><li>They also were the mentors of Raja Hasan in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007, a popular singing contest on Zee TV . </li></ul>
