I have decided to call my magazine – BeatsThis is because this totally relates to the genre of my musicmagazine (Hip-Hop, R&B and Rap). For example if someone said“something something „Beats Magazine‟ ” they would instantly knowthat its a Hip-Hop, R&B and Rap genre type of magazine due to thename which is widely known and used in this field of music. My magazine will contain predominantly Rap, Hip-Hop and R&Bmusic. However, would also contain things relating to my audience, such as sports, games consoles, clothing, phones, movies andmany more things. This is to further attract my audience intopurchasing the magazine. The demographic for my magazine is for a predominantly maleaudience from the ages of 14-25 years old. From the research I have carried out, I have acquired a sufficientamount of data which helps me decide on choices that I will takeout. For example, most people would spend in the range of £3-4 onmagazines, therefore, I have decided to make my magazine £3.50.
For my magazine I will collect a primary source of data via predominantly close – ended questionnaire which is a quantitative type of data. This is done as it would give me statistics and figures on what gets the most votes, this would help me decide on important future choices such magazine price, or if to make a magazine website? I also did secondary research for things such as my audience profile e.g. what are they into, hobbies etc. These are the questions that I have asked in my questionnaire:1 - Are you male or female? 5 - How much are you willing to spend on 10 - What best describes yourMale music magazines? employment status?Female Dont buy any Employed full-time £1-£2 £3-£4 Employed part-time2 - How old are you? £5+ Employed part-time and student0-11 Self-employed12-15 6 - How often do you buy music Not employed, but looking for work magazines?16-18 I Dont Not employed, not looking for work19-25 Weekly Retired26+ Monthly Student Other Homemaker3 - What do your parents/carer’s do for a 7 - What music magazines do you read?living? MY QUESTIONNAIRE WAS COMPLETED BY 62 PEOPLE, of all ages both equally male and female, this was done to get a more reliable and valid results. TO GET A WIDER DEMOGRAPHIC AND A FAIRER RESULTS I published my questionnaire on Facebook as it‟s a target for many people of different ages.AS CERTAIN PEOPLE WITH CERTAIN AGES CAN NOT BE REACHED ON FACEBOOK, I printed my questionnaire and gave it out to random chosen audience. However I also did target people that were older than 20 or children 0-11, this is so that there is more fair results and a wider opinion.WHEN MY QUESTIONNAIRE WAS DONE I collected the results and counted the answers for each of the 12 questions and put them in bar graphs, pie charts etc. I used percentages to make my results more professional and accurate. I then commented on the results of each question on what I have found out. I also added extra information of people parents job and on how that effects the peoples choices.
RESULTS ! Are you male or female? 50% of the people that done my questionnaire where 50% 50% Male male and 50% Female where female, this was done to make it fair. How old are you?3025 Most of the people20 that filled out the15 28 questionnaire were10 16 – 18 year olds. 8 12 8 Followed by 12 – 15.5 60 0 - 11 12 - 15 16 - 18 19 - 25 26+
What do your parent’s/carer’s do for a living? 31% Unemployed Employed 69% Most peoples parents where employed. I left them some space to write what their parents work, this would help me know what type of income households are interested on what or how it effects their choices.
I divided the employment of peoples parents to 3 categories which were: Lower class jobs. E.g. Waiters, sales assistant Middle class jobs. E.g. Teachers, fraud officers Upper class jobs. E.g. Bankers, doctorsFrom the lower class jobs I found out that literally everyone both male and female buy no magazines whatso ever and all are willing to spend 0-£2 on magazines. Additionally all of them consume their music byfully downloading music illegally. Also I found out them some of them where students and looking for workat the same time, this was about 50% of them. From the middle class jobs I found out yet again that both males and females buy no magazines at all, however more than half are willing to spend in the range of £3-£4 on the purchase of magazines. For this Ifound out that about 60% of the people consume their music legally, there was a range of answers on howthey consumed it was very random as some purchased CD’s, some attended concerts, some watched it onTV or the internet , and some legally download it.From the upper class jobs, unlike the lower and middles class jobs, some people actually purchased musicmagazines, however this was predominantly rock music fans. Surprisingly for this one most people werewilling to spend up to £2 on magazines. Also surprisingly 90% consumed their music by downloading itillegally from the internet. While the remaining 10% consumed it by legal internet music downloads.I have found out how the employment of the parents/carers immensely effects the minors lifestyle andchoices in life. And that not higher paid jobs necessarily mean that teenagers would spend more on certainthings, as this was proved above.
Most people said that theyHow much are you willing to spend don’t buy any magazines, followed by 14 people saying they would pay £3-on music magazines? £4. From these results I decided to make the price of the magazine £3. 50. 45 This is very good as professional magazine sell 40 their magazines in the range of £3.50 - £6. 35 30 25 43 20 15 10 5 14 0 3 2 Dont Buy any £1 - £2 £3 - £4 £5+
45 What type of music do you mainly40 listen to or are interested in? More than 70% of the35 people mainly listened to Hip Hop, R&B and Rap.30 This is good as my magazine will contain this genre of music. The next25 majority are rock fans. I may add a rock artist on 41 the cover with a rap artist20 to help further promote and market my15 magazine, and see if I could get them to be10 interested in rap, Hip- Hop and R&B music to 10 gain more readers.5 5 1 2 1 20 0 0 None Hip Hop, Rock Electronic Classical Reggae Jazz Traditional Country R&B and Rap
How often do you buy music magazines? I Dont 3% Weekly 18% Monthly 79% of the people said they don’t buy any music magazines, which is a massive disadvantage. And 18% said they buy magazines weekly, followed by a minor 3% that buy it monthly. I have decided 79% to release it every month as most professional best-selling magazines are sold monthly.
What music magazines do you read? If none just write N/A. Most people said that 60 they don’t read magazines, and only 6 said they do. And out 50 of them 6 only 1 reads a Hip-hop, R&B and Rap magazines (Source 40 Magazine), while the rest read rock type magazines. This tells 30 me that more of the 56 people who are interested in rock buy 20 magazines than any other genre. 10 0 1 1 N/A 1 Uncut 2 Mojo 1 Folk Roots Kerrang Source
If you was to buy a music magazine would you like freebies e.g. free music CDs or free internet downloads etc? 92% of the people said they would be interested in freebies. 8% And 8% said it didn’t really bother them whether it did or not. I have used synergy in a way that I have decided each time my magazine is released it would 92% include a freebie such a CD, free posters, concert tickets and video games; this isYes because as my main audience are males, and males areNo interested in games consoles so this would help market my magazine.
How do you mainly consume the music 40% said they mainly you listen to? consumed their music by downloading it illegally from the internet. Followed by a 2% 24% that consume it by watching it on TV or websites Illegal internet Download such as YouTube. Therefore I have decided that as most people are download it 24% Legal internet Download illegally, I would use that in a good way to market my magazine by providing in 40% Purchase CDs each issue free music downloads from the magazines website and other freebies. I would also create a Go to concerts section in my website where5% music videos or music by itself can be consumed totally Watch on TV/ Websites free, this is because 24% of the people consume music by (e.g. Youtube) TV or web. I would also 15% create a magazine app that Radio can be downloaded into hubs 14% (e.g. phones) . This is a good way of cross media convergence and advertising , promoting and marketing my magazine
45 What best describes your employment40 40 out of the 62 people were status? students, followed by 8 which35 were looking for work. Followed by 6 people that30 were employed full-time. I have decided to25 advertise temporary paid work experience in each20 issue (so the advertising 40 would continue to attract15 customers) within the magazine company to attract consumers.105 8 6 3 2 20 1 0 0 Employed full- Employed part- Employed part- Self-employed Not employed, Not employed, Retired Student Homemaker time time time and but looking for not looking for student work work
Do you visit music websites for things such as latest music, gossip etc? (e.g. YouTube, magazine websites etc). 71% said they visit music websites such as YouTube for things such as latest29% music videos etc. 29% said they didn’t. Therefore due to the high figure that people do go on music websites for music purposes, I would make a section within my website where 71% consumers may listen or watch music videos totally free! This again is a Yes good way to promote my No product.
How often do you visit music websites? 0% 6% 6% Never 29% Daily23% Every two or more days Weekly Monthly 36% Yearly 71% of the people do visit music websites, with 36% saying they visit music websites daily. Its followed by a nearly a third 29% of the people saying that they never do. This shows me most people do care about music and check upon it daily, therefore my website would be updated daily.
