• Digital media is the realization that computer engineers have had for years.
  • Originally multimedia did not have to be digital. For example a multimedia presentation could have incorporated a slide show for visuals, tape recorder for audio and an overhead projector for text.
  • Because more software apps have become available and hardware has become more efficient at handling more than one media the term multimedia has been coinedDigital remember is the binary form of real world information.
  • There are standard collections that come with the software or program such as word, you can purchase collections, or use web-sites
  • Convey motion more vividly than with text alone
  • Math Blasters is a popular remediation software in the district
  • Riverdeep=Interactive math and literacy software used in the district
  • Harry Wong has a must have book Called The 1st Days of School- never pass up a chance to see him, I drove to Miami he was so incredible and practical.

    1. 1. Chapter 5
May 26,2010
Integrating Digital Media & Educational Software Applications
2. 2. Digital Media
The evolution from basic computations to multimedia to Digital Media
Tools for humans to communicate and learn
Interactivity=the essential feature of digital media
Allows for individualized instruction and exploration
Enriches education
3. 3. What is Digital Media?
Technology=computer use in the classroom
Multimedia=more than 1 media
Multimedia incorporates a variety of elements including text, graphics, audio, video and animation
4. 4. What is Digital Media?
Digital media= technologies that allow users to create new forms of interaction, expression, communication and entertainment in DIGITAL format.
Students can interact with and become part of the learning experience
Take virtual tours to places they may never get to physically visit..like the Great Wall of China
5. 5. Digital Media Software
Computer based presentation or application software that uses multimedia
Interactive digital media software allows users to move through information at their own pace
In digital media apps, any clickable object can serve as a link
http://kmakatche.glogster.com/Web-20/
6. 6. Digital Media
Fundamental elements of multi and digital media:
Text=characters that are used to create words, sentences, paragraphs etc.
Graphics=digital representation of non text info
Clip art collection= a set of previously created graphics that can be inserted into a document.
7. 7. Digital Media
Animation=graphics that have the illusion of motion
Audio=sounds, music or speech
Video=visual frames that are played back at speeds of 15 to 60 frames per second and provide full motion in real time
8. 8. Digital Media Applications
Involves the use of digital media technologies in education, business and education.
Simulations=computer-based models of real-life situations “how-to guides”
Can provide safe alternative to dangerous experiments
9. 9. Electronic Books and References
Electronic book or e-book=small, book sized computer that allows users to read, highlight, & bookmark online text
10. 10. Virtual Reality
Use of computers to create an artificial environment that appears and feels like a real environment
The user can explore & manipulate the environment
http://secondlife.com/?v=1.1
11. 11. Drill and Practice Software
A good tool to help students with remediation
Remediation is reviewing content many times and using alternative methods until the concept is grasped
12. 12. Distance LearningAKA
Distance education/web-based education/distance learning/distributed learning=the delivery of education from one location to another
Blended course= has a combination of face to face meeting and online course sessions
13. 13. Web Based Learning and Distance Learning
Web-based course=online course, taught primarily on the web
Blended course=a combination of face to face class meetings and online course sessions
Web-enhanced= a traditional classroom course that uses the web to “enhance” the content
14. 14. Tutorial=designed to tutor or instruct, often used to learn a new concept.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/HA100742261033.aspx
Branching=nonlinear approach that offers alternative paths through a tutorial based on students’ responses.
15. 15. Integrated Learning Systems
ILS= sophisticated software developed by an established educational software corporation
