Tsunami Warning SystemWhen an earthquake is occurred in the Indian Ocean area,data from many kind of sources is sent to the Pacific TsunamiWarning Centre based in Hawaii and the Japan MeteorologicalAgency (JMA) in Tokyo.Warning Centre announce the tsunami warning and manypeople will evacuate after hearing this warning.
  4. 4. PTWC and JMAThe PTWC and the JMA areimportant part for providing theIndian Ocean with what are knownas tsunami “watches”. ManyRegional Tsunami Watch Providersin Indian Ocean countries inherit thiswork by 2011. Australia, India,Indonesia, Malaysia and the AsianDisaster Preparedness Centre inBangkok are on track to becomeregional watch providers. Countriescan develop technology wecan share the data.

Hawaii and Japan centres workToday, however, the two centres in Hawaiiand Japan have the primary responsibility.They receive earthquake information anddata from tidal gauges and Deep-oceanAssessment and Reporting of Tsunamis(DART) sensors or buoys. They also receivenews over the telephone.The job of Japan and Hawaii centres is tolocate and decide the size of earthquakes,decide whether tsunami is happened or notand predict tsunami wave arrival times.
  6. 6. How the warning is transmitted?Warnings to the people living near the seaare sent in a variety of ways. Over theairwaves - radio, television, SMS, email,using bells, megaphones or loud-speakersattached to mosques.
  7. 7. The problem of warning systemTechnology does not reachall areas and even if it does,warnings can be disrupted ornot in the right language forall the affected people tounderstand. In other areas,there are no escape routesas transport infrastructure ispoor.We have to think and solvethis problem in order to savemany lives from now on.
  8. 8. Conclusionindian Ocean Tsunami warning system consists of a lot oforganizations and enormous funds. A part of developingcountry has no contact method and I think it is important tocreate the system.It is one of the problem we have to solve to raise the precisionof the prediction and arrival time.
