Open pedagogy is a solution to..?
Create real world context for academic work
Engage students
Encourage deeper learning
Contribute to the field
The Problem: Despite students having day 1
access to learning resources (OER), high failure
rates and achievement gaps persist.

We studied an OER course on digital photography taken by middle and high school
students.
The teacher, assignments, and grading rubrics for the course remained the same
during the period we examined. The only changes made to the course were the
integration of additional OER created by the middle and high school students and
vetted by the teacher.
We found that students who took the version of the course that contained OER
created by other students performed statistically significantly better on course
assignments than students who had taken the course before the student-created
OER were added.

Open Pedagogy

Students come into our courses with knowledge, beliefs and attitudes gained in
other courses and through daily life. As students bring this knowledge to bear in our
classrooms, it influences how they filter and interpret what they are learning.
If students’ prior knowledge is robust and accurate and activated at the appropriate
time, it provides a strong foundation for building new knowledge.
However, when information is inert, insufficient for the task, activated
inappropriately or inaccurate, it can interfere with or impede new learning.

smart teaching. San Francisco, CA: Jossey Bass

Choral Explanations
These differences in explanations are not window-dressing -- it’s not making a
“Pokemon-themed” set of math problems. It is an attempt to tie previous student
experience to new knowledge, which one can argue is the essence of learning. By
tapping into the student’s particular experience, students learn things in ways that
stick. By providing examples at a variety of levels of detail, we provide a way for
students to level-up their understanding bit by bit. - Mike Caulfield
Candela
Cognitive resources that would
otherwise be used to focus on learning
are instead used to figure out if they
belong.
Because questions about belonging
undermine performance and are more
pervasive and persistent for students
from underrepresented and stigmatized
groups, they contribute to problematic
achievement gaps.

The Problem: Despite students having day 1
access to learning resources (OER), high failure
rates and achievement gaps persist.
How might open pedagogy be part of the
solution?
Approaches to Open Pedagogy
Learn in public
Identify new learning materials
Create new learning resources
Improve assessment
Validate belonging
Approaches to Open Pedagogy
Learn in public
- Blog assignments
- Wikipedia assignments and updates
- Community projects
Identify new learning materials
- Anthologies
- Alternative materials
Create new learning resources
- Components of textbook
- Case studies and applications
- Alternative explanations (at differing levels of detail)
Improve assessment
- Assessment items
- Feedback on assessment items
Validate belonging
- Personal experience
- Contextualized examples

Create a marketing message for
Portland Community College
- Who is your target?
- How do you differentiate?
- What is your message?
- What is the call to action?
Candela
http://mindsetscholarsnetwork.org/learning-mindsets/belonging/
In my course, where do
students question belonging?
How can the most credible
voice of experience connect?
What learning and creation
does this enable?
How can students share the
outcome or success?

  • 7. Candela We studied an OER course on digital photography taken by middle and high school students. The teacher, assignments, and grading rubrics for the course remained the same during the period we examined. The only changes made to the course were the integration of additional OER created by the middle and high school students and vetted by the teacher. We found that students who took the version of the course that contained OER created by other students performed statistically significantly better on course assignments than students who had taken the course before the student-created OER were added. • 10. Candela Students come into our courses with knowledge, beliefs and attitudes gained in other courses and through daily life. As students bring this knowledge to bear in our classrooms, it influences how they filter and interpret what they are learning. If students’ prior knowledge is robust and accurate and activated at the appropriate time, it provides a strong foundation for building new knowledge. However, when information is inert, insufficient for the task, activated inappropriately or inaccurate, it can interfere with or impede new learning. Candela CC0 Photo by Eddie Kopp, Jason Blackeye, Jeremy Bishop, Swaraj Tiwari, Ryan Holloway, Aatik Tasneem Choral Explanations These differences in explanations are not window-dressing -- it’s not making a “Pokemon-themed” set of math problems. It is an attempt to tie previous student experience to new knowledge, which one can argue is the essence of learning. By tapping into the student’s particular experience, students learn things in ways that stick. By providing examples at a variety of levels of detail, we provide a way for students to level-up their understanding bit by bit. - Mike Caulfield
  • 14. Candela Cognitive resources that would otherwise be used to focus on learning are instead used to figure out if they belong. Because questions about belonging undermine performance and are more pervasive and persistent for students from underrepresented and stigmatized groups, they contribute to problematic achievement gaps. • 16. The Problem: Despite students having day 1 access to learning resources (OER), high failure rates and achievement gaps persist. How might open pedagogy be part of the solution?
  • 17. Approaches to Open Pedagogy Learn in public Identify new learning materials Create new learning resources Improve assessment Validate belonging
  • 18. Approaches to Open Pedagogy Learn in public - Blog assignments - Wikipedia assignments and updates - Community projects Identify new learning materials - Anthologies - Alternative materials Create new learning resources - Components of textbook - Case studies and applications - Alternative explanations (at differing levels of detail) Improve assessment - Assessment items - Feedback on assessment items Validate belonging - Personal experience - Contextualized examples

Editor's Notes

  1. (Read from Slide) Event host awareness and key sponsor partnerships are critical for our go-to-market success. We have a unique advantage to leverage the already established influence of local brands in the brewery, tech, music, and all the small to medium general events located in Portland, OR.  By providing a deep value proposition for sponsors (our clients), they in turn market Gathrly to event hosts (our users) for fast scaling adoption. In order to rapidly deploy our platform to complete marketing testing and validation, we will utilize the lean startup methodology of creating a well constructed MVP centered around sponsored event discovery and sponsored promotion. Instead of investing hundreds of thousands of dollars into mobile app development for launch, we will instead build out a streamlined web portal for centralized event discovery (through 3rd party open APIs) that will allow events hosts an easy to use platform to display their events and brand sponsors an easy way of seeing a real ROI on their sponsorships. We will launch this platform in the fall in Portland, OR. In parallel, we will also build out our V1 of the web based sponsorship portal and marketplace to allow event hosts a self service tool for attracting sponsors. And we will provide sponsors with an easy way of discovering relevant events to have their brands featured at.  We will continue to expand our web based platform to other major west coast cities in mid 2017 while we prepare for our iOS and Android launches. Our goal is to reach 1,000,000 unique impressions by June 2017 before the app launch.
