(An eBook reader can be a software application for use on a computer such as Microsoft's free Reader application, or a book-sized computer that is used solely as a reading device such as Nuvomedia's Rocket eBook.) Users can purchase an eBook on diskette or CD, but the most popular method of getting an eBook is to purchase a downloadable file of the eBook (or other reading material) from a Web site (such as Barnes and Noble) to be read from the user's computer or reading device. 2. 2. About Dominica • Dominica is NOT The Dominican Republic! • At 290 sq. miles, the country is almost exactly double the size of Detroit • Population ~72,000 • 365 rivers, “one for each day of the year” • Official language is English
  3. 3. X Melville Hall Airport A short runway that dead ends into the sea greets you after you have braved the swerving through the mountains approach. After landing you will walk across the runway to a small processing area. The baggage carousel is approximately 10 feet long so be prepared to wait for your bags. Free WiFi though!
  4. 4. Wildlife Dominica is home to all kinds of animals. On the land and in the sea, you see something new every day. You should know that there are no poisonous animals here, nothing worse than a bumble bee. No sharks in the sea either. Very wild but not so dangerous.
  5. 5. Red Rock X Red Rock is exactly what it sounds like, a really big rock that is red. Watch your step, though. Sheer cliffs and unsure footing could end your trip early! The best part of this spot is Red Rock Haven restaurant. My favorite place in the entire world to eat and hang out.
  6. 6. Fort Shirley X Located in Cabrits National Park, Fort Shirley was built on the North end of Dominica to help defend the island. The National Park features incredible walking trails and wildlife.
  7. 7. Indian River One of the locations where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed, this river is a nice destination. Gasoline motors are forbidden here so you will be in a small boat powered by the oars of your local guide. Dynamite rum punch is your reward for finishing the trip. X
  8. 8. Daily Life (Portsmouth) X Day-to-day living on Dominica is very simple in so many ways. Pack your patience and sense of humor and you will find a very relaxed way of life on the island.
  9. 9. Fishing Charter trips are always available but if you are on a budget and want a little bit more of a challenge then you can build a hand fishing rig and drop a line in just about anywhere. Just bring hooks and line with you, find the rest as you go.
  10. 10. Sunset Bay X If you are in the mood for a giant plate of lobster then Sunset Bay Lobster Palace is a must stop. Practically all you can eat will set you and your date back about $100ec, or about $40us. The sunset and beach are included at no extra charge.
  11. 11. X Mero Beach A low key beach spot with a few small restaurants. Lots of friendly locals hang out after fishing all day. They repair nets and exchange stories about the sea. Swim, sunbath, play volleyball then relax over amazing local cuisine.
  12. 12. Roseau X The capital city is home to the port where cruise ships dock. It is the most populated city center in the country. Open air markets, historical sites and KFC are the main points of interest in Roseau.
  13. 13. Scotts Head At the Southernmost tip of Dominica is where you will find Scotts Head. It is a tiny strip of land that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea. The hike to the top can be grueling in the hot sun but the view from the top is worth every ounce of sweat. Seriously though, bring water! X
  14. 14. Cold Sulfur Springs The ground bubbles with gas that smells like rotten eggs. It’s a wild sight to see. Bring an extra pair of shoes for this trip. A short hike on rough trails isn’t as bad as the lack of platforms to stand on. You will be right in the muck! X
  15. 15. Emerald Pool X Deep in the rainforest you will find a trail that leads to Emerald Pool. Bring your swimming trunks if you want to take a dip in the cool water. You will find freshwater shrimp darting in and out of the rocks around the pool. Look up and you can see the Sisserou Parrot flying above.
  16. 16. Carib Territory X Dominica is home to the last native Carib Indians in the world. They inhabit the Carib Territory. Largely relying on tourist dollars they still remain true to their heritage. They make all sorts of products by hand and entertain with ceremonial dance performances.
  17. 17. Les Saintes If you are up for a fun day trip you can find lots of catamarans for charter. We left from Portsmouth and made the trip in a few hours. We returned the same day. Day charters can be had for as little as $100/person depending on your group size.
