  2. 2. Gothic Era 1280-1510 <ul><li>“Gothic” is actually a time period rather than a style of art. </li></ul><ul><li>Art was used mainly for religious reasons - used to teach illiterate peoples about their religious beliefs. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Before Giotto, art was considered a craft. When he came along, spirit was put into painting and it was an amazing feat to be able to paint! He lived from 1237-1337 </li></ul><ul><li>Here is one of his paintings: </li></ul><ul><li>Lamentation. 1304-1306. Fresco. Padua, Italy. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>The Lorrenzetti brothers lived from 1280-1348 in the city of Siena. </li></ul><ul><li>Pietros first painting was the Polypytch and was painted while he was in training as a pupil of Duccios. It was commissioned in 1320. </li></ul>

Illuminations were illustrations for books. </li></ul><ul><li>Their most famous art was a book of the different months of the year called the Tres Riches Heures . </li></ul>

  8. 8. Architecture <ul><li>The style of architecture was noted mostly </li></ul><ul><li>on the cathedrals built during the period. It is quite different compared to modern architecture! </li></ul>
