### What's Supersymmetry?

1. 1. What is Supersymmetry ? What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  1
2. 2. What is Supersymmetry ? Just a single  ques:on for  crea:ng enough  trouble.  What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  2
3. 3. What is Supersymmetry ? ….But since people  keep asking me a lot  about it, I feel like  explaining it in the  simplest form here.   What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  3
4. 4. What is Supersymmetry ? So let me  try….  What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  4
5. 5. Supersymmetry: Assuming that the scalars we observed in real life (e.g: mass) is just projections of extra dimensional vectors of supersymmetric space, Supersymmetry searches for possible symmetries between those scalars and vectors. What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  5
6. 6. Supersymmetry: Assuming that the scalars we observed in real life (e.g: mass) is just projections of extra dimensional vectors of supersymmetric space, Supersymmetry searches for possible symmetries between those scalars and vectors. Scalars, vectors,  extra dimensions,  space, projec:on?? … Did you  understand it  now??  What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  6
7. 7. Supersymmetry: Assuming that the scalars we observed in real life (e.g: mass) is just projections of extra dimensional vectors of supersymmetric space, Supersymmetry searches for possible symmetries between those scalars and vectors. Me  neither!!!  What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  7
8. 8. Supersymmetry: Assuming that the scalars we observed in real life (e.g: mass) is just projections of extra dimensional vectors of supersymmetric space, Supersymmetry searches for possible symmetries between those scalars and vectors. Let’s draw a  picture in other  words.  What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  8
9. 9. This is Bob. He lives in a 4 dimensional (x,y,z,t) world like us. This means he can measure length, height, width of an object at any time. Here he has 3 vectors called x,y,z. This is Alice. She lives in a 5 dimensional world. Because she can measure one extra dimension θ in addition to x,y,z,t. So she has 4 vectors called x,y,z,θ. What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  9
10. 10. This is Bob. He lives in a 4 dimensional (x,y,z,t) world like us. This means he can measure length, Hushhhhh… Their  height, width of an object at any time. Here he has 3 vectors called rela:on has a strange  x,y,z. story and I will tell you  the reason why….  This is Alice. She lives in a 5 dimensional world. Because she can measure one extra dimension θ in addition to x,y,z,t. So she has 4 vectors called x,y,z,θ. What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  10
11. 11. Assume that this axis represents Bob’s  world: (x,y,z,t) = xμ  where μ = 1,2,3,4  BOB So that x1 = x , x2 = y , x3 = z , x4 = t   ALICE What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  11
12. 12. Xµ BOB …and assume that this axis represents Alice’s  world: (θ,x,y,z,t) = θa  where a = 1,2,3,4,5   So that θ1 = θ , θ2 = x , θ3 = y , θ4 = z , θ5 = t   ALICE What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  12
13. 13. Xµ Whenever they decide to measure BOB the dimensions of an object, they can not find the same results. ALICE a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  13
14. 14. Because Bob was measuring 4 dimensions Xµ -width, length, height, time- but Alice was measuring one more dimension called θ BOB in addition to width, length, height and time. Yµ Y  ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  14
15. 15. Xµ One day, Bob decided to do better than this. And he realised that he can also BOB measure a scalar called Mass. Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  15
16. 16. He called up Alice and asked if she Xµ can measure any scalar feature of the BOB same object Y. Alice told “What is a scalar?” Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  16
17. 17. Xµ She was completely unaware of SCALAR features of Y !! BOB Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  17
18. 18. Bob thought “That is too much. She must Xµ have been LYING!! And this relation cannot BOB go on with lies.” Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  18
19. 19. Then a physicist appeared. And warned Bob.. Hey my friends, Xµ You’r ventured BOB into Uncharted waters.  Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  19
20. 20. There is a simple solution and Xµ hence the facts are always BOB simple and understandable:   Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  20
21. 21. “Alice” lives in an extra Xµ dimensional world so that she measures scalars (like mass) BOB as vectorial dimensions.   Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  21
22. 22. …But Bob measures some of Xµ her vectorial dimensions as scalars. So there is a naïve BOB relation between Mass and θ.   Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  22
23. 23. Years ago, Bob was living in Xµ Alice’s Extradimensional World. But his θ has collapsed into a BOB scalar axis. Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  23
24. 24. Now you learned everything Xµ and i will tell you how you can relate your two different BOB worlds with one equation.  Yµ Y  Mass of Y ALICE Ya a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  24
25. 25. Assume that a particle travel with Xµ a constant speed and it’s momentum is “p”. So length of its momentum BOB vector will be |p|2 = 0  Mass ALICE a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  25
26. 26. But Alice will write it as papa =0 Xµ and Bob will write it as pµpµ-m2 = BOB 0 . µ 2 p pµ − m = 0 Mass ALICE a p pa = 0 a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  26
27. 27. If we transform Bob’s scalar axis to Xµ Alice’s vectorial axis θ, only Alice’s equation would be valid and it means BOB “supersymmetric transformation”. µ 2 p pµ − m = 0 Mass ALICE a p pa = 0 a What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  27
28. 28. As a natural consequence of supersymmetry: We should observe “scalar and vectorial partners” of elementary particles. Vectorial Particle Scalar Particle electron selectron u, d, c, s – quark u, d, c, s – squark top quark stop bottom quark sbottom …(Fermions) ….(Bosons) SUSY Transformations kudayblog.wordpress.com  28
29. 29. Supersymmetry: Assuming that the scalars we observed in real life (e.g: mass) is just projections of extra dimensional vectors of supersymmetric space, Supersymmetry searches for possible symmetries between those scalars and vectors. I hope it is more  apparent now.  What is Supersymmetry ? kudayblog.wordpress.com  29
