3. 3. Introduction

Due to uncontrolled growth of information and financial constraints none of the library or information center can claim to be self-sufficient in terms of finance and collection.

Unaware of the situation, a user wants all relevant document published in his area of interest. In this situation the only solace a library has is Union catalogue for locating document and Inter Library Loans

Due to recent developments initiatives are taken at regional and national level to bring libraries together in order to share their collection. Several library and information networks are being created.

These networks not only serve towards library cooperation but they also provide variety of services.

 4. 4. Network Development In India

The genesis of Library Networking in India can be traced back to the late 1980s.

NISSAT (National Information System for Science and Technology), a body under the Dept of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India took the initiatives of supporting the city based library networks. This lead to the establishment of city library networks including BONET (Bombay Library Network), CALIBNET (Calcutta Library Network), DELNET (Delhi Library Network which later became Developing Library Network in 2000), MALIBNET (Madras Library Network) and PUNENET (Pune Library Network

 10. 10.

The University Grants Commission, Govt of India also established INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) in 1988 to network the University Libraries in India.

Only a few networks were able to work on the self sustainable model and continued to exist after the initial phases of implementation and functioning

 11. 11.

DELNET, started as a project in 1988 became a national library network in India by the year 2000.

UGC continues funding INFLIBNET to provide the support to the University Libraries in the country.

The remaining city library networks were shut down due to the lack of planning and financial resources.

 12. 12. Objectives of this study

To explain the use of Library Networks Services in Jaipur Engineering Colleges

To improve the efficiency and use of Library Networks in Jaipur engineering college

 13. 13. Major Problems in Library Networks

Physical Isolation

Ego of Librarians

Rigid Procedures

Closed Policy

Disinterest

Low Priority

Infrastructure

Result

Out of total institute surveyed13.33%were government and 86.67%were private

88.89% respondents use network services in their library where as 11.11% respondents do not have any network service in their library

Out of total libraries surveyed 73.3% have subscribed to DELNET and 6.67 % are using other library networks

Majority of respondents are using network services for last four years

 15. 15.

Out of total respondents surveyed 18% students, 22% faculty members, and 60% library staff is using network services

51.1% use of network is for databases search 40% is for book search while 8.89% users and using network for miscellaneous purposes

The respondents were found to be price insensitive. Low price /economy was not the criterion for choosing the network service

Out of total respondents surveyed 66.67% confirmed for the realization of the purpose for which the network service was subscribed where as 17.77% believed that the purpose of subscribing the network service was not realized and 8.88% were not sure about it

86.67% respondents think internet can substitute library networks

Only 20% of the respondents believe that the Indian networks are as good as international networks while other believe that the Indian library network need to be improved to meet international standards

 16. 20. Conclusion

Development and management of library networks involve high commitment and tenacious work, particularly in the Indian environment where majority of the libraries do not have qualified and skilled manpower and also the financial resources to introduce automation and the current information technologies.

 17. 21.

Co-operation, not only among libraries, but also among library networks is essential for the success of these networks in the country. For the success of library networks, the network managers have to make considerable efforts for detailed planning implementation and successful operation of networks
