  2. 2. 1940's – Women in Every Day Life <ul><li>Women's Army Corps and Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service are made and women are allowed to serve in the U.S. Navy </li></ul><ul><li>All-American Girls Professional Baseball League is founded </li></ul><ul><li>Eleanor Roosevelt is appointed as a U.S. Delegate in the United Nations </li></ul><ul><li>First African American woman wins an Olympics gold medal </li></ul><ul><li>Ladies Professional Golf Tour is created </li></ul>
  3. 3. 1940's – Women in Workforce <ul><li>Propaganda used throughout World War II urges women to join the workforce </li></ul><ul><li>Women are learning new skills in the workforce </li></ul><ul><li>Number of women in workforce increases in 5 years by 11% </li></ul><ul><li>Most jobs go back to men when the war ends again </li></ul><ul><li>Women are encourage to find 'female' jobs or go back to being housewives </li></ul>

  5. 5. 1940's – Photo Media <ul><li>Women were needed by their country to aid them in their battle to winning the war </li></ul><ul><li>Women were shown either as devoted wives through the propaganda to make them stay faithful to their husbands </li></ul><ul><li>Women were also shown as being strong and independent and that they had to pick up the slack because the men were out fighting </li></ul><ul><li>There became a division: hard-working workforce women and housewife </li></ul>

Media vs. History <ul><li>The media was showing women that they could be strong because of what was going on within the country </li></ul><ul><li>However, because of all the power women were gaining, there was still the image of the housewife to ensure that women did not forget where they really belonged </li></ul><ul><li>There begins to be a strong contrast between 2 different types of women and media begins to be torn on what image to portray of women </li></ul>
  7. 7. 1950's – Women in Every Day Life <ul><li>The height of the baby boom </li></ul><ul><li>Women are needed for one thing and that is baby-making </li></ul><ul><li>Women are expected to return to being housewives and stay-at-home moms </li></ul><ul><li>Women are no longer a large part of college enrolment (only 30% are women, dropping 17% from the 1920's) </li></ul>
  8. 8. 1950's - Women in the Media <ul><li>Gentleman Prefer Blondes </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Women are gold-diggers who only care about money </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Women are expected to look gorgeous at all times (Appearances are extremely important) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Men have to watch out for a women's sexual charm </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Marilyn Monroe (Sexualization of women) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>I Love Lucy </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Housewife </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Attentive mother, careless with money, devoted, etc. </li></ul></ul></ul>

History <ul><li>Media is painting two separate pictures: the good housewife and the sleazy gold-digger </li></ul><ul><li>History is showing that women are supposed to stay at home and be a good housewife as shown in I Love Lucy </li></ul><ul><li>Marilyn Monroe and other actresses of this time are shown to be bad girls that women should not want to be (Sexually promiscuous) </li></ul><ul><li>The Scandal with John F. Kennedy promotes this idea that women like Marilyn Monroe are no good </li></ul>
