I'm a Scientist, Get Me Out of Here! is two weeks of online madness where students ask scientists questions and get to vote. The scientists are evicted one by one until there is a winner who receives prize money of $1,000 to spend on outreach.

The program has been running in the UK for four years and in Australia for two. This presentation at CONASTA 61 explains the program and some of the insights from teacher and scientist evaluations.

Spread the word and register now for the next event in August at http://imascientist.org.au/teachers

    11. 11. What was the single most importantoutcome? Seeing the enthusiasm of my students. That students can see the importance and relevance of science to them and their lives. Student engagement with working scientists. Students were very impressed and appreciated their responses and input.
    12. 12. Have your initial expectations been met? Yes. The students can see more clearly the possibilities that exist following studies in Science. Their natural inquisitiveness has been stimulated and enthusiasm to engage in class has improved. In a crowded curriculum, in a very busy school, it is often difficult to have students participate in events that genuinely improve their engagement and interest in science. The response from my students more than justified our participation.
    13. 13. How might participation be improved? Give teachers more time to prepare the students with who the scientists are before the event starts. Preparation is the key to success with this, and I think we would benefit more with the bonus of more prep time.
